International Design Action Day
June 17, 2005 | Levent OZLER
The pressure to be innovative, the drive for efficiency, marketing-based hype, and short-term business interests affect the work of many designers, often to such a great extent that the quality of design developments is jeopardized.
De-acceleration strategies are needed - slowing down, taking time, reflecting on the place of design in our society - in hopes that this will improve the quality of design, and thus our quality of life.
For these reasons, the participants at the 2003 St. Moritz Design Summit resolved to declare June 21st as an annual International Design Action Day.
We invite designers worldwide to contribute to discussion or send their artwork, thoughts on the day.
June 21 is International Design Action Day as declared by the St. Moritz Design Summit.
June 21st is, not coincidentally, the summer solstice. In the northern hemisphere, June 21st is the longest day of the year.
This choice is an ironic comment on the tremendous velocity of the world of design; giving designers around the world "a little more time" for action or reflection that is not otherwise possible.
