Q&A with Motorola Design Director Jim Wicks
July 3, 2005 | Levent OZLER
The introduction of the ultra-slim Motorola V3 clamshell mobile phone has helped Motorola sharpen its brand recognition, and the product is among the top-10 models in all the major handset markets, including China.
Jim Wicks, vice president and director of the Consumer Experience Design group at Motorola, outlined Motorola's latest design concepts during a recent interview with DigiTimes.
"I am the third director of the Consumer Experience Design group at Motorola.
I hold a BFA in industrial design from the University of Illinois and a graduate degree in design from Nihon University in Japan.
I spent many years in Japan, first as a designer for Japan-based GK Design and then with Sony.
I later joined Sony's design group in the US, where I focused on personal communications, computing and new audio products.
Our team came out with Sony's first mobile handset.
I have also studied Japanese tea ceremony and flower arrangement, and tried to incorporate some of these concepts, together with the spirit of the Zen Buddhism, into the design of a number of IT products."
