The DWR Champagne Chair Design Contest
December 15, 2005 | Senay TOPCUOGLU
Several years ago, Rob Forbes was given a miniature chair made out of a champagne cork's wire cage and metal medallion. It sat on his desk and received enough compliments to seed the idea for a design event. The DWR Champagne Chair Contest has now become a holiday tradition, reaching a growing audience both at home and abroad.
The design challenge remains the same with only a few modifications and date changes. Create a miniature chair using only the cork, wire and foil from no more than two champagne bottles. The contest is open to anyone from professional designers to students. We have extended the dates through January this year to accommodate the full holiday season, and the abundant champagne bottles around the New Year.
A selection of chairs, including the six finalists, will go on a tour to DWR Studios around the country. The finalists will also be featured on our website and in a Design Notes newsletter. In the past the chairs have appeared in posters, in national media, on catalog covers and in galleries in Spain.
Requirements
Use only the cork, wire and foil from no more than two (2) champagne bottles. Glue is the only permitted adhesive. You are not permitted to use any additional materials-including tape and/or paint.
The chair must measure no more than 4" x 4" x 4" in height and be shipped in a box measuring no larger than 12" X 12" X 12". Submissions must arrive at our office no later than Friday, January 6, 2006 at 5pm PT.
