Vaughan Civic Center Aims for Silver Level Leed Certification

Vaughan Civic Center Aims for Silver Level Leed Certification

December 27, 2005  |  Elif SUNGUR

The winning scheme in a design competition, this project will create a civic focus for Vaughan.

The project involves the design of a new City Hall building and a Master Plan for the site which includes a diverse program of Civic Square, Reference Library, Vaughan Hydro, a water feature, Chamber of Commerce, Public Gardens, and a heritage building.

Rather than proposing one large building, the scheme was developed as a civic campus of low-rise buildings which frame a zone of open public spaces.

The site and buildings are organized into series of east-west bands, overlaying the linear patterns of local farmlands and the larger framework of the concession grid that characterize the cultivated landscape of Vaughan's agricultural history.

To demonstrate the City's leadership role in sustainability, the design is targetting Silver Leed Certification.
