The Art of the Comic Strip: Tate Modern Workshop
February 12, 2006 | Levent OZLER
Drawing on mass-media sources from newspapers and magazines to photography, film and pulp-fiction book covers, this workshop explores the influence of comic strips on fine art and film. Many artists have contributed comics to newspapers; others, like Federico Fellini, have used comic storyboards to plan films.
The tutor shows examples of Art Nouveau comic masterpieces, as well as more recent work by Robert Crumb, Daniel Clowes, Douglas Huebler, Raymond Pettibon and others. Between sessions, participants are asked to experiment with simple methods of comic production from montage to scriptwriting. Participants do not need to have good drawing skills to attend.
