The Surface Design Association is having its Silver Anniversary Conference at the Kansas City Art Institute through Sunday.

The Kansas City-based international association includes almost 3,000 artists, designers and collectors. The group works to increase the awareness, understanding and appreciation of textiles in the art and design communities.

A variety of artists will give presentations at the conference, which started Thursday and is expected to attract about 500 artists from around the world.

Speakers include:

Ellen Dissanayake, author of "What Is Art For?"

Jason Pollen, president of the association and chairman of the fiber department at the Kansas City Art Institute

David Revere McFadden, chief curator of New York's Museum of Arts and Design
