Between Art and Life The Contemporary Painting and Sculpture Collection

Between Art and Life: The Contemporary Painting and Sculpture Collection

March 24, 2006  |  Elif SUNGUR

In 1959 Robert Rauschenberg said, "Painting relates to both art and life. Neither can be made. (I try to act in that gap between the two.)" This presentation of the SFMOMA collection is organized around this philosophy. With works from the past five decades, the exhibition emphasizes special concentrations within SFMOMA's contemporary holdings and includes works by Vija Celmins, Olafur Eliasson, David Hammons, Jenny Holzer, Toba Khedoori, William Kentridge, Agnes Martin, Julie Mehretu, and Gerhard Richter. Of special note is an audio/video walk by Janet Cardiff, which is available for checkout at the information desk in the Haas Atrium.

The exhibition is part of the permanent collection.
