Alonso Collection

March 28, 2006  |  Elif SUNGUR

Many decades ago, Mr. Alonso became fascinated by the various qualities and technical possibilities of glass. Collecting crystal and glassware has been one of his true passions ever since. The Alonso collection is highly varied, both in forms and in techniques. It covers the period between the end of the 19th century up to ca. 1990: from art nouveau to Studio Glass Movement.

Art nouveau manifested itself particularly in the production of artistic glass, but to a much lesser extent in the production of ordinary glass. Especially France became a moving force, thanks to people like Emile Gallé and the Daum brothers.

The glass art from the interbellum period in the Alonso collection is represented by unique creations by Val Saint-Lambert. 1959 was a turning point in the production of artistic glass. The American Harvey Littleton demanded a role for glass as a medium for modern artists. The phenomenon of the Studio Glass, produced in a small furnace at the workshop of a glass artist, was born. Mr. Alonso mostly collected Studio Glass after designs by Samuel Herman.

The exhibition will take place until the end of 2006.
