Return on Ideas: Better by Design

October 4, 2006  |  Levent OZLER

From 14 October to 12 November 2006, the red dot design museum will present the special exhibition "Return on Ideas - Better by Design". In the exhibition design-oriented companies such as adidas, Miele, and Daimler-Chrysler as well as design firms and the German Aluminium Association (GDA) will illustrate the significance and implementation of innovative ideas as the basis of commercial success. The exhibition is part of the supporting programme of the ENTRY2006.

The exhibition "Return on Ideas - Better by Design" emphasises the significance of design as a driving force behind economic growth and combines the presentation of promising materials and technologies with the insight that commercial success is always preceded by a good idea. However, these ideas need a form if they are to change our everyday culture and be successful. The exhibition "Return on Ideas - Better by Design" presents innovative solutions and pioneering concepts of the participating companies.

Many companies and designers have changed our everyday culture with their ideas. Important pioneering achievements such as Tupperware or the Teflon frying pan have managed to revolutionise innovative materials for everyday use. Thanks to the latest technologies, the automobile industry has reached such a high quality that safety and luxury are part of the standard. In the game of football, the sports equipment becomes a high-tech product itself; the football boot can be tailored accurately for 22 feet.

The pioneering ideas will be made accessible to the interested public from 14 October to 12 November 2006 in the red dot design museum. The exhibition "Return on Ideas - Better by Design" offers insights into the development processes of great ideas which aim to be indispensable in our everyday lives one day. These portraits on successful design are not only to inspire the imagination and creativity, but also offer an insight into the background and the conditions that give rise to commercial success.

Accompanying the exhibition a book will be published that takes an indepth look at the subject "Return on Ideas" on 104 pages.

Background Information on the Exhibition
The idea for the exhibition goes back to a series of lectures by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, the head of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen. The design expert and professor for business communication has - analogous to the slogan "Return on investment" - studied the influence of creative and innovative ideas on companies' commercial success - the "Return on Ideas" - and has held numerous lectures on this topic in Europe, Asia, and North America.

The exhibition "Return on Ideas - Better by Design" has been organised and realised by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen on behalf of the Zollverein Exhibition Association, which is in charge of the overall plan of the exhibition "ENTRY2006 - How will we live tomorrow?". The exhibition has been sponsored by the European Union, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the City of Essen.
