Singapore to Hold First-ever Design Festival in NovemberSingapore will become a stage for the world's top designers at the end of this year, when it holds its very first design festival.
It is just one of the many steps to make Singapore the design hub of Southeast Asia.
Design is more than just about technology.
The DesignSingapore Council says design is embedded in culture and human factors -- two things which won German car-maker BMW's heart when it set up a design studio in Singapore.
To get BMW's attention, the council visited Munich two years ago and showed the company's design director four books on Singapore, one of them on the Zouk disco.
Said Milton Tan, director of the DesignSingapore Council, Information, Communications and the Arts Ministry, "It really got him so excited; he was like a little kid in the candy store after that.
He was so amazed that there was such a place in Singapore, it was a disco and that book had lots of very interesting commentaries, interesting views that really showed him that this is a place that has got a heart and a soul, which was very important for such a high-end design centre."
Besides high-end design, part of the vision is also to make Singapore a regional design hub by having the upcoming Singapore Design Festival.
Said Dr Tan, "We promote design to see how it can be better appreciated and adopted by businesses. W
