Illy Espresso International CompetitionThe espresso-coffee moment is a frame - a real break - in
the film of everyday life and is common to millions of people
all over the world.
Drinking an espresso-coffee is a modern - here and now -
version of a ritual that has an age-old history and that each
time acquires a special space-time value.
Today, the locations in which this ritual is consumed (in a
museum, in the old centre of a European city, on a boat
sailing upriver, on an American strip...) are countless, as are
the ways people enjoy a cup of coffee: alone, as a couple, in
a group, or in a crowd. In the street, in a bar, at an airport
counter, in the foyer of a museum...
illycaffè and Domus are promoting
a competition of ideas open to young designers, artists and
architects all over the world aged 35 and under.
The competition seeks to discover new ways of enjoying an
espresso-coffee and it is meant as an opportunity to discuss
the presence of "Break-spaces and dialogue" in modern
urban life. It will promote and study the espresso-coffee
space as a new and important molecule in public space and
social interaction. It will spread and strengthen a ritual that -
if treated carefully and intelligently - can increase the
opportunities for exchange and dialogue in cities that are
increasingly privatised and divided into specialised
enclosures.
