Design a Safe Paraffin StoveThe Paraffin Safety Association of South Africa (PSASA) has launched a stove design competition as part of an initiative to reduce the number of shack fires caused by paraffin stoves, mainly in informal settlements.
PSASA said at least 4 000 people died in fires caused by these stoves every year.
About 20-million South Africans were forced to cook on dangerous, sub-standard paraffin stoves, and most were not aware of the risks.
PSASA and Proudly South Africa have put up R500 000 to encourage designers to come up with safe, functional and cost-effective solutions, to try reduce the number of fires that occur due to paraffin stoves.
Martin Feinstein of Proudly South Africa said the competition was about seeing whether South Africans could come up with an ingenious solution to an alarmingly common problem.
Anyone can enter, but a working prototype is the minimum requirement.
The prototypes will be subjected to a series of scientific performance measurements as well as a professional engineering evaluation.
