Russel Wright Awards 2004Russel Wright was a pioneer of industrial design, a man whose signature style of dinnerware and furniture helped define the look of American homes in the middle of the last century.
On Sunday, the 2004 Russel Wright Awards will be presented at Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center in Garrison to "honor individuals and institutions that carry forward the multiple dimensions of Wright's legacy in design and environmentalism. "
This year's honorees include Jens Risom, the noted Danish furniture and interior designer; brothers Michael and Stephen Maharam, whose innovative approach brought a new relevance to their family's veteran textile company, Maharam, by re-issuing iconic, mid-20th century designs of Ray and Charles Eames, Vertner Panton and others; and the Institute of Ecosystem Studies, the Millbrook-based organization formed in 1983 and considered a leading proponent in addressing urgent environmental issues.
Luncheon will be prepared by the staff of The Garrison, and the 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. event will include live and silent auctions.
The event will be held under tents in Mary's Meadow at Manitoga, Wright's home and garden that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a featured site in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Artists' Home and Studio Program.
