The 20th Tokyo Design FestaThe 20th Tokyo Design Festa takes place this weekend, with organizers claiming the twice-yearly exhibition-cum-fes tival is now the city's largest art and design event.
The Festa will feature about 5,500 exhibitors showing a wide range of art and craft items, including photographs, paintings, installations and multimedia design works.
Part of the appeal for exhibitors is the anything-goes approach taken by organizers, who see the Festa as an opportunity for artists to get some recognition for their work.
"We don't pass judgment on the artists' work, and there is no censorship or restriction, so we have a variety of different works at the event...We hope many of our exhibitors will become well known and active in various aspects (of culture), through Design Festa," Kunie Usuki, director of the event, said in an interview with The Daily Yomiuri.
The free-for-all approach may mean variable quality--organizer s promise benign chaos and "whirling individuality"-- but it has succeeded in attracting exhibitors from 30 countries.
The Design Festa takes place Saturday and Sunday at Tokyo Big Sight, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m daily. Tickets are 1,000 yen on the door or 800 yen in advance.
