Label A Cab Ride with Rachel Abrams

A Cab Ride with Rachel Abrams

Rachel Abrams is a design strategist. With a background in interaction design and political research, she identifies people-friendly, technology-mediated experiences for commercial spaces and public places.

Her interest in New York City's yellow cabs began in 2005, as a participant in the Design Trust for Public Space's Designing the Taxi initiative.

From there, as one of the Design Trust's six Taxi07 Fellows, she contributed to its report to the NY Taxi and Limousine Commission, Taxi07: Roads Forward.

Following the fellowship, Rachel's independent research has continued to focus on opportunities for policy and tech-led enterprise to intersect and inform each other, exploring how regulators and design innovators can collaborate to improve everyday experiences of public space.

PARCS Bene Launches New Meeting Environments Developed by PearsonLloyd

PARCS: Bene Launches New Meeting Environments Developed by PearsonLloyd

PARCS is an innovative furniture programme developed in collaboration between Bene and PearsonLloyd, set to change the design of the workplace.

A new generation of worker is no longer confined to their desk, but instead uses laptop and mobile phone as, when and where it is convenient, comfortable and conducive for concentrating or communicating.

A hybrid between architecture and furniture, PARCS offer a range of different types of places an dspaces in which to conduct informal meetings and discussions; take a few minutes away from the desk to relax; give a casual presentation; or find a semi-private place for concentration or a personal call.

PARCS makes sense of the open areas set apart from the open-plan desks and cellular meeting rooms.

These places and chance encounters often produce moments of inspiration and positive actions.

Seemingly simple, PARCS is the result of 2 years' research and investigation into the complex needs and behaviour of the "knowledge worker."

Bene regards PARCS as a directional furniture programme that anticipates the way the workplace is changing.

PARCS complements Bene's extensive range of office furniture - desks, seating, conference tables, as well as partitioning.

It provides its clients with a comprehensive offer to address every aspect of effective, efficient and economic office design.

Good Design Practice Creates a Thriving Design Industry

Good Design Practice Creates a Thriving Design Industry

Leading designer David Worthington, Chair of the Design Skills Alliance, has appealed to designers to take urgent action to sort out their professional skills as new figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that only 8.9 per cent had received job-related training, compared to 15.7 per cent of architects and 16.2 per cent of civil engineers.

Worthington, who is Chair of Lloyd Northover Group, said "I believe that the UK design industry is the best in the world, but we must develop our professional skills for it to remain that way - and the sooner people start, the better."

To support this drive, the Design Council and Creative & Cultural Skills have created a comprehensive resource of tools, "how to" guides, professional development course listings and other information.

The aim is to raise the numbers of those accessing job-related training in the design industry to be more in line with comparable sectors such as architects.

Over three quarters of designers admit that what they lack most are business management skills; six in ten say they lack the skills to understand their client's business; and over forty per cent lack the verbal skills to help them communicate their ideas effectively, according to research carried out by the Design Council in 2005.

Herman Miller's Twist LED Task Light Earns Spark! Award

The Twist Light from Herman Miller, designed by Yves Behar from fuseproject, received the "Spark!" award at the premier SparkAwards exhibition on October 29, 2009.

Twist is Herman Miller's new, energy-efficient, eco-friendly undershelf LED light for systems furniture, providing value, simplicity, and personal control for office workers.

Twist demonstrates Herman Miller's leadership in innovation, performance, and sustainability by using fewer raw materials and providing a lighting solution that's efficient to operate and maintain.

"New technologies are driving a fundamental shift in the way people think about lighting," commented Behar.

"With LEDs in particular, their incredible efficiency, extremely small form factor and minimal maintenance requirements are changing the way people conceive of, design, and integrate lighting into the built environment."
