Since the great stock exchange crash in 2000 the stock price of the Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony has never really recovered.
In the past year alone, it dropped by about 27 percentage points at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
Unlike its competitors Sony showed not much resistance against this slump in the past five years.
In contrast, Apple, Samsung, LG Electronics or Philips, improved their stock prices more or less been steeply in the past few years.
With a comprehensive design offensive the Japanese electronics manufacturer seems to control this negative trend struggling to regain market shares it has lost over the past years to more flexible and aggressive competitors.
For decades, Sony has been a synonym for the latest technologies combined with excellent and original design.
Thereby, it has succeeded again and again to launch innovations on the market that became symbols and cultural assets worldwide.
We have only to think of the first transistor television set in the world, Walkman, PlayStation or Aibo the computer dog.
Consequently, Sony has been honoured with the red dot design award: design team of the year, the highest award of the design world.
However, after the turn of the millennium the company lacked major investments and seemed to become rather cumbersome.
Now the electronics group is remembering its former strength with regard to design and innovation.
It is starting out to create new icons.

Gone are the days when design was the domain of a lone individual sitting at a drawing board visualising new kettles, chairs, typefaces or fashion garments.
These days, designers are becoming members of multi-disciplinary teams, using their unique creative problem-solving skills to address challenges which affect society, culture and the economy as a whole.
Now Kingston University, working in partnership with St George's, University of London, is set to lead the way in capitalising on this trend by establishing a new centre for design and innovation with a particular focus on benefitting the health and cultural sectors.
Dubbed Innoversity, the Centre is being launched with a £250,000 award from the Higher Education Council for England.
It will feature a laboratory that will be home to multi-disciplinary teams made up of designers, researchers and engineers who will work together to come up with solutions to real-life business challenges.
Kingston University's Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Professor Penny Sparke, who is heading the Innoversity development team, said the project had originated from recommendations made by Sir George Cox in his 2005 'Review of Creativity in Business'.

The Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) is calling for entries for the much anticipated Furniture Design Award (FDA) 2009 and registration is now open.
This year, participants in the Students and Young Designers categories are given free reign with their furniture creations as there will not be any given theme, unlike in previous years.
Mr Andrew Pang, Chairman of the FDA 2009 Organising Committee, said, "For FDA 2009, students and young designers are given a chance to design furniture pieces which best reflects their design capability.
Understanding that students and young designers require more leeway for exploration, we have decided to give them a chance to fully stretch their imaginations by not setting a theme for 2009.
Over the years, we've seen FDA participants rise to the occasion and submit themed works that are innovative and exciting, and for 2009, they will have the absolute freedom to create without boundaries."
"The steadily increasing participation over the years at FDA shows that emerging designers believe it is a great platform to showcase their talents and network with industry players." added Mr Simon Ong, Chairman of the Design Development Committee for SFIC.
