International Design Scoreboard Initial Indicators of International Design Capabilities

International Design Scoreboard: Initial Indicators of International Design Capabilities

This report presents findings from a study to develop an International Design Scoreboard.

A framework for ranking nations has been created that considers design at a national level as a system comprising enabling conditions, inputs, outputs and outcomes.

A series of indicators has been identified that collectively enable a picture of national design capability to be considered, in both absolute and relative terms.

The "relative" indicators (e.g. number of design graduates per million population) help to show the relative intensity of design capabilities within a nation.

The "absolute" indicators (e.g. total number of design graduates) show the overall scale of the design capability in each country.

This framework has been used to collate data on 12 countries.

It is evident that Korea is emerging as a new design powerhouse, with other countries in East Asia displaying similar ambitions.

The UK retains leading capabilities in design education, but the design services sector has reduced in size over the past ten years.

Material ConneXion at the Salone del Mobile 2009

Material ConneXion at the Salone del Mobile 2009

New York-based global materials consultancy Material ConneXion will collaborate with Material ConneXion Milano to present "Sustain + Innovate," a dynamic showcase of the latest sustainable and innovative materials at this year's Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, from April 22-27, 2009, between Halls 14 and 18.

Featuring more than 100 of today's most cutting-edge materials and a selection of products made possible by these advancements, "Sustain + Innovate" will provide invaluable insight into the material directions that are driving innovation and empowering design.

The exhibition will focus on twelve key areas where recent material developments have made a significant impact: eco-effectiveness, fiber reinforcement, security, sound absorption, foam alternatives, advances in molding, translucency, functional and decorative surfaces, advances in leathers, heat and the biopolymer revolution.

A highlight of the exhibition will be a display of groundbreaking products that demonstrate an exceptional use of advanced materials and a clear commitment to the environment.

Among these are adidas' Lone Star Shoe, designed exclusively for Olympic athlete Jeremy Wariner, which contains multiple pioneering technologies including a customized high-strength textile sourced from Material ConneXion's Materials Library and Klattermusen's rECOver backpack, the world's first 100% recycled nylon bag of its kind.

Democratic Design IKEA

Democratic Design: IKEA

"The aesthetic form is there for all. And not just for the museum!"

This quote from the IKEA catalogue of 1979 stands programmatically for the design strategy of that company from Southern Sweden, which since 1948 has grown from a one-man-business to become the biggest furniture store in the world and shaped the concept of "democratic design" like no other.

Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich - is now the first museum to devote a major exhibition to this subject - presented in the inimitable art and design crossover context of Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.

For IKEA, design is one the central factors that contribute to realising the idea of functional, well designed furniture that is affordable to most people.

Among the concepts behind this is the notion of "Beauty for All" (Ellen Key 1899), which had its roots in the reform movements of the 19th century and the "Swedish Model" of a modern, open society oriented towards the family and social concerns.

A decisive aspect of this philosophy is the development of a specific language of form and product range that combines different directions in design: on the one hand, Scandinavian Modernism with its predilection for wood, natural surfaces and organic shapes; and, on the other, international movements such as that of Flower Power, Sixties-style »Democracy from below« or Post-Modernism.
