![]() Parsons Presents Design at the Edge with Bruce NussbaumBruce Nussbaum, Visiting Professor of Innovation and Design at The New School and BusinessWeek contributing editor, will host conversations with international design innovators John Thackara (April 20) and Ezio Manzini (May 4) as part of Design at the Edge-Redesigning Our Lives in an Era of Radical Change, a lecture series held in conjunction with a course he is teaching this spring in the School of Design Strategies at Parsons The New School for Design.Thackara and Manzini are internationally recognized for their leadership roles in an emerging international design movement that collaboratively addresses issues of sustainability and community. The April 20 event with Thackara will take place at Wollman Hall, and the May 4 event with Manzini will take place at Tishman Auditorium, The New School, both located at The New School, 66 West 12th Street, New York. Nussbaum's class focuses on the forces of demographic, technological, cultural, economic and political change that are disrupting our social organizations and personal lives. ![]() The University of Design at San Marino at the Salone Satellite 2009The University of design at San Marino will be participating this year for the first time at the Salone Satellite of Milan.The Industrial Design Undergraduate Programme - resulting from the collaboration between the Università IUAV di Venezia and the Università degli Studi della Repubblica di San Marino - has been active within the autonomous Republic for the past four years. Some of the names included among the numerous teaching staff at San Marino are: Riccardo Blumer, Giorgio Camuffo, Marco Ferreri, Giulio Iacchetti, Sergio Menichelli, Francesco Messina, Massimo Pitis, Gianni Sinni, Omar Vulpinari and Marco Zito. At Salone Satellite 2009 (D-35), the University Degree Program will be presented with a selection of photographs of the projects and works conducted and realized by the University's students, with a simple and essential but also effective exhibition. On Sunday April 26th , for the entire day, there will be a workshop conducted by Riccardo Blumer, which is to involve different professors and students from the University. ![]() Thonet Photo Competition: 214 x 214 - A Chair the World OverThonet announced a worldwide photo competition to mark the 150th birthday of the cafe chair "No 14" - today called the 214.When Michael Thonet first introduced his "Consumsessel Nr. 14" in Vienna in 1859, he could have had no idea that it would become the chair with the highest production run of all time. Since then, the chair - still today made from solid bentwood - has been in continuous production by Michael Thonet's descendants at the firm's headquarters in Frankenberg, Germany. Owners of an original model, or their friends are now invited to send in a digital photo of "their" chair and, in a few sentences, to tell a short story about it. The aim of the competition is to decide on the 214 best or most original photos of the 214 Chair, which will then feature in a publication. ![]() Renault-Nissan Alliance Partners with MIIT of China for Zero-Emission MobilityThe Renault-Nissan Alliance today announced a partnership with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT) for Zero-Emission Mobility, a first step in bringing Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) to China.Nissan will provide MIIT with electric vehicle (EV) information and propose a comprehensive plan, including a blueprint for a battery-charging network and programs for mass marketing EVs. The Chinese government has launched a pilot program of new energy vehicles to be rolled out to the public transport sector in 13 cities. Nissan also partnerships with Wuhan municipal government as the first pilot city for zero emission mobility for further development of planning after the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed today. "Nissan believes that zero emissions are the ultimate direction for alternative energy vehicles," said Toshiyuki Shiga, chief operating officer of Nissan. "We are establishing innovative partnerships with governments, cities and agencies to promote EVs worldwide, and in China we will work closely with our local partners to develop the EV market." The Renault-Nissan Alliance, which aims to be the global leader in zero-emission mobility, will bring electric vehicles to China in early 2011, making China one of the first countries to be supplied with electric vehicles from the Alliance.
