Lightbulb Moments James Dyson Awards

Lightbulb Moments: James Dyson Awards

A cyclist's jacket that uses technology from the Nintendo Wii to control automatic brake lights and indicators; a smart loo that emails your doctor a health assessment; a wheelchair that uses caterpillar tracks to lower a patient down a flight of stairs.

Some of these brilliant ideas are bound to wing their way into our homes and lives, while others are flights of fancy that may never get off the drawing board.

But all the ingenious designs on this page, which were shortlisted for this year's James Dyson Awards, suggest that the instinct for innovation among young people is in rude health.

For the vacuum-cleaner tycoon Sir James Dyson, 60, whose foundation coughed up more than £8,000 in prize money, the quality of the designs is no surprise.

"I'm continually impressed by the original ideas that young people are generating to solve everyday problems," he says.

"One advantage they have is that they have no fear of trying something that might go wrong."

Kohler Launches Breakthrough Karbon Articulating Kitchen Faucet

Kohler Launches Breakthrough Karbon Articulating Kitchen Faucet

What does the ultimate in functionality for a kitchen faucet really mean?

For Kohler ultimate functionality can be defined as a kitchen faucet that possesses the functionality and performance of a pull-down faucet, while also allowing the user to position and leave the sprayhead right where it's needed, thereby freeing up both hands for kitchen prep and clean-up tasks.

To develop a kitchen faucet that satisfied this requirement was the tall task presented to the Kohler new product development team.

The result is the new KOHLER Karbon kitchen faucet, a faucet of unexpected and intriguing design that will undoubtedly become the primary focal point of any contemporary kitchen setting.

"This articulating faucet represents a breakthrough in the evolution of the category," commented Les Petch, senior product manager for KOHLER kitchen faucets.

"The quest for the ultimate in functionality has not only produced a faucet that outperforms other models but has also yielded an astonishing piece of contemporary design work that represents as much a piece of art as the next generation in faucet technology.

It truly is a one-of-a-kind."

The original design impetus of the Karbon kitchen faucet was inspired by lighting and construction equipment with articulating joints.

Japan Aging Suit Puts Car Designers in Senior Circuit

Japan Aging Suit Puts Car Designers in Senior Circuit

Planning for your old age? Designers in Japan are.

Carmaker Nissan Motor is using a specialized driver's suit and goggles to simulate the bad balance, stiff joints, weaker eyesight and extra five kilograms that may accompany senior citizenry.

Associate chief designer Etsuhiro Watanabe says the suit's weight and constriction help in determining functionality and accessibility within cars by putting young designers not only in the minds of the mobility-challenged, but also in their bodies.
