Design Council and Technology Strategy Board Partnership

The Design Council and the Technology Strategy Board have announced a new partnership that will see the two organisations working closely together on joint projects to strengthen design's role at the heart of science and technological innovation.

"By placing design at the heart of technological innovation we will multiply the opportunities to deliver a range of shared objectives, including the chance to help UK business focus on technological innovation now so that we are ready to emerge from the current downturn in a stronger position," said Iain Gray, Chief Executive of the Technology Strategy Board.

"We have great confidence that our collective success will help support the UK economy's recovery over coming years."

"To solve the big economic, environmental and social challenges, which the UK now faces, requires ingenuity," added David Kester, Chief Executive of the Design Council.

"Britain has always excelled in creativity, design and technology, but for too long they have worked separately.

Now is the time to harness this natural partnership to unlock world-beating innovation.

This will mean more opportunities for designers to be involved with major technology projects, and showcase the huge benefits which design can bring to technology-driven companies."

HP Z Workstation Designed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA

HP unveiled the HP Z Workstation series - a reinvention of the product category from the core outward that offers customers unprecedented performance, value and serviceability in a sleek new design.

The interior of the Z line offers a totally modular design, in which components slide neatly into place in a cable-less environment for optimal serviceability.

On the outside, the Z line features a streamlined brushed-aluminum exterior inspired by automotive and industrial design leader BMW Group DesignworksUSA.

"Opening the door of the new BMW Z4 and the side panel of the new HP Z Workstation reveals that both are as aesthetically powerful and innovative on the inside as they are on the outside," said Verena Kloos, president, BMW Group DesignworksUSA.

Design for a Living World

Design for a Living World

This spring, The Nature Conservancy and the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will present "Design for a Living World," a traveling exhibition featuring objects created by leading designers and made from sustainable, natural materials.

The exhibition will premiere at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum on May 14 and continue through Jan. 4, 2010.

The Nature Conservancy collaborated with prominent designers from the worlds of fashion, industrial and furniture design, and each designer focused on a natural material from a specific place where the Conservancy works.

The locations ranged from iconic American landscapes, such as the sweeping grasslands of Idaho, to such exotic places as the southwest coast of Australia and the forests of China's Yunnan Province.

The designs explore the transformation of organic items-wood, plants, wool- into beautiful and useful objects.

By choosing sustainable materials that support, rather than deplete, endangered places, designers can help reshape our materials economy and advance a global conservation ethic.

Through this process, the exhibition reveals fascinating stories about regeneration, natural places and the human connection to the Earth's lands and waters.

The exhibition features designs by Yves Behar, Stephen Burks, Hella Jongerius, Maya Lin, Christien Meindertsma, Isaac Mizrahi, Abbott Miller, Ted Muehling, Kate Spade and Ezri Tarazi.

IDC Wins Global Awards for Packaging Design

IDC Wins Global Awards for Packaging Design

Following in the footsteps of two IDEA Awards for innovation and design, Industrial Design Consultancy Ltd. has been presented with two further awards for excellence in packaging design - this time on a global scale.

The multi-disciplinary product development consultancy received an AsiaStar and WorldStar award for its role in designing and engineering a self-injector insulin pen that looks set to improve the lives of many diabetes sufferers.

Developed for Indian healthcare giant, Wockhardt, the insulin pen is a first in both design and functionality for the Indian market.

Disposable, reusable and affordable, the pen is expected to dramatically advance diabetes treatment in India by offering a portable, quick and easy insulin dosage system for people on the move.

The insulin pen beat several hundred entrants for both awards.

Judges came from seven different countries to make the decision at the AsiaStar Awards in Tokyo.

The Wockhardt Insulin Pen was compared to similar products worldwide and singled out for innovation and excellence in packaging design.

Such global recognition was particularly timely as IDC opened the doors to a new office in Hong Kong at the start of the year.

The move will give the company an official base to continue a long history of working with international clients and provide added value for UK customers looking to break into world markets.
