Giving Creatives a Business Boost

Giving Creatives a Business Boost

On average, 26% of a design agency's potential income is lost through inefficiency, inaccurate quoting or free pitching.

The variety of skills required in a design agency was highlighted by Charlie Hoult's decision in May to step aside as Loewy Group chief executive to become vice president of development.

Hoult had led the group through a series of acquisitions and mergers that enabled Loewy to quadruple in size in four years.

It was then felt that different skills were required to run the much larger organisation and Hoult moved to a position that would enable him to focus on what he does best: "doing deals and all that", as he put it.

Young Guns Design Graduate Competition

Young Guns: Design Graduate Competition

September sees HEARD launch an 8 week showcase competition for young design graduates.

The competition provides a great opportunity for new graduates to show the skills they have developed during their degree and for HEARD to champion their work in a commercial environment.

Six graduates will be selected every week to organise their own five-day showcase at Heard Gallery, London.

A finalist will be chosen from each showcase and the winner will be announced at the Awards Private View on Thursday 28th October 2008.

The panel of experienced and influential judges will include representatives from the press, design education, design industry leaders and seasoned buyers.

The winner will receive the Award for Excellence in Design and the opportunity to run their own exhibition and Private View evening at Heard Gallery.

HEARD's decision to host a graduate competition in September aims to provide new avenues and opportunities for this years talent to get their work out there and be seen by the right people.

Hamilton C2 What Color is Hope

Hamilton C2: What Color is Hope?

When a loved one is in intensive care, it can be terrifying for all concerned.

Industry leader Hamilton Medical and world-recognized industrial design consultancy RKS have combined efforts to create a new ventilator designed to create a better ICU experience for medical professionals, patients, and loved ones, and, in turn, improve patient recovery.

Recent studies have proven what many have long known: ICU patients need more than mere dependable delivery of oxygen. They need hope.

"We found that the role psychosocial factors play in surgical recovery was even bigger than we expected," said Peter Jokl, MD, Yale University School of Medicine.

After reviewing more than 29 studies spanning 15 years, the conclusion of the Yale study was clear, how patients and loved ones feel can play an important role in patient recovery.

When worry, anxiousness, and other negative feelings are minimized and replaced with positive emotions and attitudes, patient recoveries are greatly improved.

Leveraging a multi-year relationship, Hamilton Medical enlisted Southern California based RKS to create a design for their new, light-weight ventilator that would take ventilator offerings to the next level.

Through use of their proprietary Psycho- Aesthetics methodology, RKS determined early on that improving the experiences of medical personnel, patients, and loved ones would be about much more than delivering cutting-edge technology.

Inventor James Dyson Could Scrap 50m Design School

Inventor James Dyson Could Scrap £50m Design School

Sir James Dyson, the inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner, is considering abandoning a £50m plan to build an engineering school of excellence in Bath following bureaucratic delays.

Ministers this week ordered a planning inquiry into the Dyson School of Design Innovation, concerned over flooding and the impact a modern building would have on the spa city, a World Heritage Site.

But the James Dyson Foundation (JDF), which would fund the school with £12 million of the inventor's fortune, condemned the bureaucratic decision by local government minister Baroness Andrews.

DIY Plans for Plug-In Hybrid XR3

DIY Plans for Plug-In Hybrid XR3

Robert Q. Riley Enterprises, a product design firm in Glendale, Ariz., announced the release of construction plans for anyone who wants to build its XR3, a two-passenger, plug-in hybrid that can travel up to 225 miles per gallon.

The three-wheel sports car's modular design can be outfitted with different power trains to create a 125-mpg, diesel-only vehicle; a 100-mile-range, battery-only vehicle; or a hybrid for increased performance and fuel versatility.

Since no computer controls are needed on the hybrid system, costs are reduced and the need for re-programming is eliminated.

"During the two years it took to develop the XR3, we received more than 2,500 advanced order reservations for the plan set," said Robert Q. Riley, company president and author of "Alternative Cars in the 21st Century."

In addition to conventional printed drawings and instructions, the do-it-yourself plans include electronic 3D models that can be viewed on an ordinary PC, computer files vendors can use to make parts, and a DVD that shows the car being built.
