Bentleys of the Future Finalists

Some of the world's best young designers from London's Royal College of Art (RCA) have created a series of remarkable "Bentleys of the Future" designs in a unique partnership with the famous British company.

Eighteen Vehicle Design Course Masters students have spent the last few months studying the work of Bentley's leading designers, including Head of Exterior Design Raul Pires who played a key role designing the company's new Mulsanne flagship.

Drawing on Bentley's proud design heritage, they have sought to develop a range of striking and futuristic car designs.

Now four of the RCA students have been shortlisted to refine their designs with Pires and his colleagues with a winner and runner-up both being invited to join the Crewe-based company for a six month secondment in the Bentley design studio.

"Working with Bentley has inspired these young designers to create a coupe for the 21st Century that embraces the latest aerodynamics technology," commented Professor Dale Harrow, Head of Vehicle Design at the RCA.

"The Vehicle Design Course attracts postgraduate students from across the world and it has been fascinating to see them make a connection with a British marque that has such a distinguished heritage."

Alice Rawsthorn Debating Sustainability

Alice Rawsthorn: Debating Sustainability

If you ask a designer to name the most important issues facing design today, one is bound to be sustainability, which is design-speak for helping the rest of us to live responsibly, ethically and environmentally.

That's the easy bit.

While most designers would agree that sustainability is important, they're very likely to disagree about everything else to do with it.

What exactly is sustainable design? What constitutes success? And failure? On what criteria?

Different designers may well give very different answers to all of those questions, and more.

StickSafe Student Design Could Save the NHS up to GBP160 Million a Year

StickSafe: Student Design Could Save the NHS up to GBP160 Million a Year

According to NHS experts, an ingenious new device will not only help save lives, but could also save the NHS GBP160 million every year.

Approximately 100,000 UK health care workers are affected by needlestick injuries annually, each one potentially exposed to number of deadly diseases including HIV and Hepatitis B and C.

It's not just the risk of transmission that is a huge problem; healthcare workers - and their families - suffer great emotional distress whilst they await the results of blood tests, often taking as long as up to a year.

Michael Korn, an industrial design student at London's Royal College of Art, decided to look more closely into the issue as part of a healthcare design project.

Through the College's Helen Hamlyn Centre, Korn was paired with medics from St Mary's Hospital, spending weeks observing ward practices.

The result was a complete redesign of the paper-pulp trays used by nursing staff and a completely new way of using them.

Korn's invention, called StickSafe, incorporates a special safely feature that allows one-handed safe use of needles.

Diego Rodriguez Why Design Matters

Diego Rodriguez: Why Design Matters

Good design does not always equal good business.

But good business outcomes-especially when the goal is to create new sources of value in the world-are most often achieved through a well-structured design process that is more holistic and inclusive than the notion of good design.

All of the energy fed into the debate about the value of good design to the world of commerce would be better spent building ways to make holistic design a routine activity in business-and society.

Arthritis Simulation Gloves Aid Companies in Designing Easy-to-Use Products

Arthritis Simulation Gloves Aid Companies in Designing Easy-to-Use Products

As the U.S. population ages, manufacturers of consumer goods are realizing that many customers may not be as nimble-fingered or sharp-sighted as they once were.

To help product designers and engineers address those changing requirements, researchers at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) have been developing evaluation methods and design techniques to identify and address the needs of all consumers, including those with functional limitations.

GTRI's latest product is a pair of arthritis simulation gloves, which reproduce the reduction in functional capacity experienced by persons with arthritis.

The gloves help those responsible for consumer products better understand how arthritis affects a person's ability to grasp, pinch, turn, lift and twist objects.

"A product manager or designer can put these gloves on and attempt to open their company's products or packaging," explained GTRI principal research scientist Brad Fain.

"If they are unable to open a product or package, then chances are high that people with moderate to severe symptoms of arthritis will also have difficulty opening it."
