Label Novo Nordisk Wins Design Award for NovoTwist Needle

Novo Nordisk Wins Design Award for NovoTwist Needle

Novo Nordisk has been awarded a Good Design Award for NovoTwist, the new needle designed for use with the insulin delivery device FlexPen.

The needle, which has a simple "just twist" attachment and detachment, makes injection easier for people with diabetes.

The Good Design Award highlights the unique design features of NovoTwist.

The judges specifically commented that "Conventional screw thread needles can be difficult to attach and detach, especially for the elderly, as limited manual dexterity and hand strength make the circular motion of screw attachment / detachment challenging.

NovoTwist has solved this problem with a simple functional design with a push-and-twist needle attachment / detachment system."

When used with FlexPen, three out of four patients prefer NovoTwist to conventional needles, and patients find NovoTwist easier to use, less timeconsuming and more user-friendly than conventional needles.

These benefits may be important to people with diabetes who seek easier and more discreet methods of self-administering insulin.

"Given the general anxiety that some people with diabetes can suffer when using any injection device, the new developments with NovoTwist are a big step forward in terms of user friendliness," says diabetes nurse Barbel Sommavilla who was involved in a key study assessing patients' preference for insulin pen needles.

Duravit Collaborates with Phoenix Design and Hansgrohe to Launch PuraVida

Duravit Collaborates with Phoenix Design and Hansgrohe to Launch PuraVida

Duravit has launched PuraVida, a complete bathroom suite designed in collaboration with Phoenix Design and fittings manufacturer Hansgrohe.

PuraVida brings poetic purity and clarity of form to the bathroom, fusing minimalism and elegance to create a sleek, yet gentle, flowing and graceful look.

The collection is Duravit's second collaboration with Phoenix Design.

"Everything about this range is completely subtle, nothing is excessive, nothing is pretentious," said Tom Schönherr of Phoenix Design.

In designing PuraVida, Schönherr and partner Andreas Haug sought to modify pure geometry in order to create a sense of gentle movement.

To that they added emotion, based on Schönherr's sense that, "In the future, there will be a need for a new form, for new emotion.

Everything will become more joyful and more lively."

By using the strength of emotion as the platform for their design, Schonherr and Haug created an entirely new, boundless and feminine look for the bathroom.

Overall, the design process became a search for a natural form - one that was soft, pure and embodied sleek timelessness.

The purity behind PuraVida is exemplified through a symbiotic relationship between the ceramics and fittings, which are meant to look "as if they had grown naturally like a tree from the earth," according to Schönherr.

Sustainable Minds Introduces LCA Software for Greener Product Design

Sustainable Minds Introduces LCA Software for Greener Product Design

Sustainable Minds, a greener product design software and information services company, today announced the general release of Sustainable Minds 1.0, a comprehensive SaaS software and information service that enables companies to create more environmentally sustainable products.

It integrates on-demand, Web-based software with educational content enabling users to apply ecodesign strategies to generate innovative and greener product concepts, and use life cycle assessment (LCA) to measure the potential environmental and human health impacts of the concepts.

This delivers quantified performance metrics to facilitate design decisions that support greener products.

It is designed for product designers, mechanical engineers, product managers, marketers and sustainability leads in manufacturing companies and consultancies, as well as educational institutions teaching product design, engineering and/or sustainable business.

"Sustainable Minds is leading the way in helping product designers understand and apply environmentally sustainable practices throughout the product design process," stated Jeff Salazar, Design Director, LUNAR.

"This system is helping us achieve our mission to generate thoughtful product solutions that are not only engaging and beautiful, but just as importantly, consider their overall environmental impact in a meaningful way.

Sustainable Minds is an indispensable tool that allows our design teams access to more valid and concrete information for critical decision making early in the design process."

James Dyson Celebrates Invention and Great Inventors

James Dyson Celebrates Invention and Great Inventors

In honor of finding engineering solutions, Dyson launches two Ball vacuums: DC24 and DC25 Blueprint.

The limited edition machines offer an insight into the methodical design process used by Dyson engineers.

The DC24 and DC25 Blueprint machines symbolize Dyson prototypes through use of white polycarbonate plastic, annotated by original engineering notes, formulas and testing data.

"Once we develop an idea, it goes into prototyping. Testing technology is the only way to make sure it works better.

The notes on the machines track the progression of improvement."

Dyson Blueprint is also a celebration of heroes of modern invention: Thomas Edison, Buckminster Fuller and Charles Goodyear and their ability to embrace failure as a lesson, part of the process and not an obstacle.

These design giants exemplified true perseverance - learning from one failure to another, to offer the world technology that changed the way we live.

"They are mostly known for their forward thinking but it was the refusal to give up that showed the world their true brilliance," said Dyson.

"Having an idea is far from invention - actually seeing it through is infinitely harder."

DBA Plans to Give Young Designers The Edge

DBA Plans to Give Young Designers The Edge

At the close of a testing year for the design business, the Design Business Association is ending the year on a high note.

The DBA is putting on an event that proudly and confidently states its belief in the future of the industry.

No doubt it's taking a risk but it's also saying as clearly as possible that risk-taking is good - indeed essential.

The event is all about making the links between creativity, risk-taking and success.

Another conference then? Far from it.

The Edge will take place over two days in London, on 9/10 December.

The participants will be up to 250 high-flyers from the rising generation of the UK's creative talent mixed with the most senior and successful of its high-achievers.

They will come together in an unusually direct way.

The first day will be workshops that will stretch participants to think fresh thoughts and try new approaches.

Experienced experts in the arts of pitching, project management, creative writing and ideas generation will lead the sessions.

This will prepare the ground for a second day that will be chock-full of inspiring talks, interactive sessions and direct encounters with design pioneers - people who have achieved great things in business and are passionate about bringing on the next generation.
