Bits 'n Pieces Exhibit at Material ConneXion

Global materials consultancy Material ConneXion will premier Bits 'n Pieces, an interactive traveling exhibition exploring the rapidly advancing technologies and new materials transforming the world of design, at its New York City headquarters at 60 Madison Avenue, from November 4 - December 4, 2009.

Curated by Dutch and Belgian designers Claire Warnier and Dries Verbruggen of UNFOLD, Lucas Maassen, Jan Habraken and Alissia Melka-Teichroew (byAMT), the exhibition will feature work by an international group of designers, architects, computer scientists and material and technology researchers that anticipates the next phase of the digital revolution.

Through objects such as furniture, architecture, jewelry, graphic design and products, by the creative minds of Steve Breman, Doug Bucci, Edhv, Willem Derks, Jan Habraken, Ilona Huvenaars, Joris Laarman, Thomas Lommee, Jennifer Leonard, MakerBot, Lucas Maassen, Alissia Melka-Teichroew (byAMT), Dries Verbruggen, THEVERYMANY, Alex Timmer, UNFOLD, Remon van den Eijnden, and Tyche van Eijndhoven, Bits 'n Pieces will examine how design is both conceived and consumed in the post-digital age.

Projects like Lucas Maassen and Dries Verbruggen's Brain Wave Sofa, whose shape was entirely determined by recording Maassen's neural activity while thinking of comfort, and MakerBot's open source 3D printer, which enables individuals to turn out complicated 3D forms quickly and affordably, highlight not only what is possible in the realm of manufacturing and design, but also what is to come.

Trek Lime Bike Wins the 2009 Peoples Design Award

Trek Lime Bike Wins the 2009 People's Design Award

The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum presented its fourth People's Design Award to the Trek Lime bicycle Thursday, Oct. 22, at its 10th annual National Design Awards gala in New York.

Tyler Florence, host of Food Network's "Tyler's Ultimate," announced the winning design and presented the award to Hans Eckholm, senior industrial designer for Trek Bicycles.

After thousands of votes were cast during the course of one month on Cooper-Hewitt's Web site, the Lime―a coasting bike designed for the casual rider interested in biking for recreation and convenience purposes emerged as the public's favorite design.

Aimed at the 65 percent of Americans who do not currently own or ride a bike, the Lime features a coasting drive system (a three-speed automatic shift with push-back brakes) combined with an upright riding position and virtually maintenance-free mechanics.

The coasting system was developed based on research findings by innovation and design firm IDEO and components manufacturer Shimano.

The Lime is manufactured by Trek Bicycle Corp.

An ideal urban commuting bike, the Lime bike is available in three sizes and features a storage saddle.

"More people on the road with two tires, rather than four, is a big step toward a greener city and world.

I'm delighted that the public has chosen to honor the Lime bike," said Caroline Baumann, acting director of the museum.
