![]() Nokia Has Designs on IndiaThe handset maker's senior design specialist is touring the country to discover how Indians use cellphones.Jhanvi Madan (not her real name), who lives in Mumbai , has been talking on her cellphone. Unknown to her, a stranger on the other side of the road is observing her carefully and taking copious notes. There's no cause for alarm, however. The person taking those notes is one of the 320 designers from the world's largest handset maker, Nokia. Her name is Younghee Jung, and she's a senior design specialist who flew all the way from the London Design Studio to spend around two weeks in Mumbai and some mofussil areas to understand how Indians use cellphones. "This is a very common practice among us," says Nikki Barton, Head of Digital Design, Nokia Design Studio. People and their behaviour "are Nokia's prime concern." "We all have different views on how a phone should look and what it should do," acknowledges Barton, adding: "Nokia has to cater to thousands of users and we have to ensure that all of them are happy." Nokia has nearly 40 per cent market share globally, and nearly 60 per cent in India unlike Apple which is better known for more aesthetic designs but has a much lower market share. more www.bus... SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress software provides advanced functionality that aides engineers in determining a product's carbon footprint, energy consumption, air and water impact. By downloading SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress, engineers and designers will help educate the next generation about environmentally friendly design while gaining a tool to help them create green designs today. ![]() Designing Our Future: A Report on Tertiary Design Education in VictoriaA new research report, Designing Our Future: A Report on Tertiary Design Education in Victoria, launched on 12 November 2009 at the Cumulus International Design Conference, looks at tertiary design education in Victoria to ensure the finest design graduates for the industry are being developed. In 2008, Design Victoria commissioned Wallis Consulting Group to research and build a bank of knowledge on Victoria's design sector. The findings, launched in December 2008 in the publication Five Years On, painted a picture of a thriving and competitive design industry. From this research, knowledge gaps were identified and subsequently the Victorian Government through RMIT University's Design Victoria unit, commissioned Wallis Consulting Group to undertake research into the tertiary design education sector. The findings, captured in Designing Our Future, offer valuable insight for government, the education sector and the design industry in the ongoing process of tailoring training and education of Victoria's design students. more Designing Our Future: A Report on Tertiary Design Education in Victoria design directory Design Victoria > Design Organizations added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Glimmer: How Design Can Transform Your Life and Maybe Even the WorldWhat can we learn from the ways great designers think-and how can it improve our world? In this highly original book by journalist Warren Berger, in collaboration with celebrated designer Bruce Mau, ten groundbreaking principles of design are shown in action-addressing business, social, and personal challenges and improving the way we think, work, and live. Glimmer takes readers on a journey through today's fascinating world of design, where the formerly distinct disciplines of graphic, product, and social design are undergoing "smart recombinations." In the cutting-edge studios of Mau and other visionaries, everything is ripe for reinvention - including the ways businesses function, children learn, and communities thrive. Designers are solving problems at an unprecedented pace today by using improved technology and the highly practical design principles described in this book, such as "Ask stupid questions," "Make hope visible," "Work the metaphor," "Embrace constraints," and "Begin anywhere." Glimmer inspires readers to apply these same principles to their own life challenges. While celebrated designers work on re-creating the world, Berger reveals the growing grassroots "glimmer movement" in which everyday people are emerging as designers and problem solvers. Readers will be fascinated by how "transformation design" is reinventing companies and addressing thorny social problems. Berger shares stories of how burned fingers, wrenched backs, and mixed-up pills all led to ingenious new product designs. more astore....
