Can You Miss the Chinese Design?

China's desire to give its home-grown design and engineering students the skills to compete in the global market received a boost in March, when Autodesk launched a student design community for the country.

The design innovation technology company has created a web portal in co-operation with the Ministry of Education that offers students from several of China's universities free downloads of the latest digital design tools for specialities related to architecture, building and mechanical engineering.

Wan Qing Sun, senior manager for education programmes at Autodesk China, says the portal gives students an opportunity to gain access to the latest technologies and to develop their skills for the global marketplace.

"It allows them to do their homework and projects online, and provides opportunities for them to network with foreign students and industry experts," adds Wan.

Recalls Illustrate How Push for Cheaper Goods Can Have Tragic Consequences

Recalls Illustrate How Push for Cheaper Goods Can Have Tragic Consequences

Until it collapsed in a financial crisis this spring, Simplicity was a case study in how companies can prosper in an increasingly globalized economy.

In eight years' time, Simplicity's sales rocketed from about $350,000 to $70 million as it imported inexpensive nursery furniture from Asia, sold by the container-load through big-box retailers like Wal-Mart Stores and Toys "R" Us.

But late last week federal regulators directed retailers to recall nearly 900,000 Simplicity bassinets amid grisly evidence that their design led to the asphyxiation deaths of two babies.

It was Simplicity's third recall of deadly products in less than three years.

The rapid rise and fall of the Reading, Pa.-based company exposes the vulnerability of an economy that demands cheap imports, too often at the expense of safety.

DBA Inclusive Design Challenge 2009

DBA Inclusive Design Challenge 2009

The DBA Inclusive Design Challenge is an annual design competition with a difference.

The objective is for designers to create a mainstream product, service, environment or communication, which can be enjoyed equally by consumers of all abilities.

A collaboration between the DBA and the Royal College of Art Helen Hamlyn Centre and sponsored by Sanctuary Care, the challenge was launched in 2000 as a creative response to the inadequate level of design in the disability aids and equipment sector.

Since then, hundreds of designers have worked on numerous projects developing a range of solutions from a plaster that can be applied one-handed to one of last year's winning entries, a Facebook style scrapbook for aiding memory.

This year's Challenge, open exclusively to DBA members, is entitled "Sedentary Lives" - encouraging designers to look at solutions to address our increasingly immobile culture, from couch potato kids who are glued to their computers and office workers who barely leave their desks, through to those who live in supported care schemes at the end of their lives.

Frighteningly it is estimated that 60 percent of the UK population could be obese by 2050.

Getting people moving is a massive challenge.

Make Some Green Competition 2008

Make Some Green Competition 2008

Keeseh Studio and A Better World by Design invite students and design enthusiasts to celebrate the pursuit of ecodesign through an international competition to utilize waste material.

A given manufacturing facility creates many copies of a product; therefore they create many copies of their waste material as well.

Waste material can be used as raw material for other products or processes; this concept is known as upcycling.

The goal of the competition is to promote upcycling by encouraging the use of wasted materials to generate innovative designs and redefine the standards of environmental sustainability by fostering balance between conservation and development.

This competition will provide a stepping stone to help educate viewers of the vast opportunities and future development of environmentally friendly processes, materials, and products.

All entries must be received digitally or by mail no later than October 1st.

A Better World by Design

A Better World by Design

What are designers doing to address critical issues facing today's world?

How are engineers developing new technologies to improve life on earth?

Where are entrepreneurs finding surprising opportunities in this mess?

A Better World by Design will attempt to address these questions by demonstrating what professionals and academics are doing to promote sustainable development and change the world for the better.

Over three days, you will hear from dozens of industry leaders about novel approaches and solutions to extreme poverty, access to basic resources, and environmental degradation.

Workshops will put theory to practice in the spirit of engineering.

And at night, get ready to let loose at our mixer and gala!
