Great Response to the First International CAT-iq Student Design Competition

Great Response to the First International CAT-iq Student Design Competition

There has been a great response to the first International CAT-iq Student Design Competition: The DECT Forum, the worldwide association of the home communication industry, has received registrations from design students from all over the world.

To enter the competition, students may present either a concept, or a fully realized prototype.

The registration period for the competition closes on September 19, 2008.

"It is not only the cash prizes that attract students to participate.

It is even more that students and their work get exposed to worldwide industry professionals, a terrific path for beginning a career", says Erich Kamperschroer, Chairman of the DECT Forum.

The CAT-iq Student Design Competition solicits innovative approaches for new and leading-edge products and services in the area of home communication.

"Students in the field of industrial design, interactive design, gaming design, and electronic engineering, are unique in their ability to impact the quality of people's future in-house communication and cordless telephony", says Erich Kamperschroer.

"Hence, we ask students to face many fascinating challenges in designing usable and enjoyable services, applications, and devices for the consumers."

CAT-iq, the global technology platform for wireless communication, is the successor of the reliable DECT standard.

Both designs are created from aluminium and mix the soft natural tone of the metal with bright paint finishes to create simplistic and stylish pieces.

Steve Jones co-founder of Innermost is particularly excited about this new collaboration with Peter Mac Can and Made their designs have a simple but elegant engineered quality that hides the complexity that has gone into creating them.

Working with Innermost for the first time, Cedric Ragot part of the design collection designedbyitem, created Mantel Dome a modern rendition of the venerable carriage clock.

The design highlights that time is precious and fragile, time should be glorified by placing it under the blown glass dome.

Massimo Fenati s Flick is a fun and witty play on the relationship between light and switch.

Poly Wins the Red Dot Design Award and the Good Design Award

The Poly chair, the newest addition to Bonaldo's partnership with the eclectic designer Karim Rashid, has not only met with great commercial success since its presentation in 2007, but is also appreciated by some of the most exacting design professionals.

This has been confirmed by both the Chicago Athenaeum and the Design Zentrum in Essen, Germany, which have respectively awarded it the Good Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award - two well-known and much appreciated international awards that guarantee the excellence of a product's quality and design.

Poly - as in "polycarbonate", the material from which the chair is entirely made - combines the maximum level of comfort for the seat and a perfect degree of inclination for the chair back.

Poly can be stacked and is also suitable for external and contract use.

It comes in a variety of colours and finishes: transparent, semi-transparent pink, semi-transparent lime, black and white shiny versions and, from 2008, in the transparent orange and smoked versions.n

Aspen Design Challenge: Designing Water's Future

AIGA, the professional association for design, today issued an ambitious call to action, tasking the next generation of creative thinkers with developing solutions to the global water crisis in its first annual Aspen Design Challenge, dubbed "Designing Water's Future."

The international contest challenges cross-disciplinary student teams to develop design solutions that encourage responsible water use, provide access to freshwater to those in need and increase awareness about the importance of water conservation.

The rules and guidelines for the Challenge were distributed to thousands of faculty and students at more than 250 universities from Beijing to Boston, and are available to all with the launch of the Aspen Design Challenge website.

Winners will have the opportunity to refine and develop their concepts with world leaders and policy makers at the Aspen Environment Forum, and their solutions will be discussed at the World Economic Forum, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, and the World Business Summit on Climate Change.

The Aspen Design Challenge is a joint project developed by AIGA and INDEX:, a global nonprofit design network, with the purpose of engaging the millennial generation in solving an emerging set of global issues.

The Challenge is issued as part of the Aspen Design Summit, an international conference organized for leaders from business, the public sector and nonprofit organizations.
