London Design Embassy 2008

The London Design Embassy - the ultimate meeting place for those connected with the London Design Festival, will be set up in the Terrace Rooms at Somerset House in a specially designed destination, created by Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby of BarberOsgerby and supported by the London Development Agency and UK Trade & Investment.

The London Design Embassy will be open Monday 15 - Friday 19 September.

International VIP guests will be given complimentary membership of the Design Embassy, giving them access to exhibitions and shows during the 11-day Festival (13-23 September).

For international buyers, design VIPs connected with the Festival and members of the press, the London Design Embassy will be a comfortable and dynamic environment to organise meetings, relax, work and network.

A "concierge" service will be on hand to help visitors navigate their way through the wealth of destinations and activities offered by the London Design Festival.

Christine Losecaat is managing the London Design Embassy on behalf of the London Design Festival.

"We aim to provide opportunities for the UK design community to network with international visitors in an informal setting" she says.

A lounge and 'chill out' zone will be a popular rendezvous for visitors.

There are also boardrooms to hire, WiFi is available and complimentary tea, coffee and water will be on offer from Leith's.

Ponoko ID Makes Custom Designed Goods Accessible

Ponoko ID Makes Custom Designed Goods Accessible

Now shoppers can have their goods designed and made just for them at the lowest price possible.

Ponoko ID is the world's first shopping request and match making service for manufactured goods.

It's the latest offering from Ponoko, the unique online marketplace that brings together consumers and designers of individualized goods.

Shoppers use the new service to post requests for custom-made individualized goods.

Requests are sent to a selection of Ponoko's pool of more than 10,000 members who then have the chance to put forward a bid to make the item.

Ponoko Chief Strategy Officer Derek Elley says Ponoko ID is a way for shoppers and designers to collaborate to create something unique and special.

"What's exciting is that Ponoko ID makes getting something made just for you as easy as sending an email," he says.

"Shoppers no longer have to accept 'one size fits all' mass produced goods but can now save a bunch of money to get their ideas turned into reality by expert designers worldwide."

Celebrating 10 Years of the Design Council Showcases MFAHs Growing Design Holdings

Celebrating 10 Years of the Design Council Showcases MFAH's Growing Design Holdings

Offering a glimpse of the design collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this August the MFAH presents Celebrating 10 Years of the Design Council, an exhibition of two dozen objects that pays tribute to the friends group funding design purchases at the MFAH.

Founded in 1998, the Design Council is comprised of community members who share a belief that objects play a defining role in the way we live in and envision our environment.

As part of their involvement at the MFAH, Design Council members have access to design experts, learn about collecting, and study objects first-hand.

Once a year they use their funds (derived from membership dues) to vote on purchases for the museum's collection.

Many of these objects acquired over the past decade will be on view in the Caroline Wiess Law Building, 1001 Bissonnet Street, from August 23, 2008 through January 4, 2009.

"The collection would not be what it is today without the support of the Design Council members," states Cindi Strauss, MFAH curator of modern and contemporary decorative arts and design and organizer of the exhibition.

"The council has been incredibly proactive in seeking out icons of the 20th-century, as well as the latest in contemporary design, singling out tomorrow's masterpieces today.

I'm looking forward to building on the foundation of the past ten years as we move forward in defining the collection."
