Work of Czech Studio Glass Master Frantisek Vizner Surveyed at The Corning Museum of Glass

The Corning Museum of Glass will present an in-depth survey of the work of internationally acclaimed Czech artist Frantisek Vizner.

Opening November 1, 2008, Masters of Studio Glass: Frantisek Vizner traces the evolution of the artist's work over 40 years, from his early designs for commercial production to his studio explorations of the modern glass vessel.

The exhibition features 40 objects dating from 1962 to 2003, drawn entirely from the Corning Museum's permanent collection.

A range of Vizner's distinctive cast and cut studio vessels luminous, minimal, sculptural forms are shown alongside examples of earlier blown glass designs for industry, many of which utilize strong color contrasts and an unusual manipulation of surface and interior textures.

"This exhibition, the second installment in our Masters of Studio Glass series, offers a true overview of František Vízner's achievements in glassmaking," said executive director Dr. David Whitehouse.

"For the first time, all of Vizner's works that are held in our collection will be on view together.

Masters of Studio Glass builds on our commitment to presenting the work of living artists and to exploring the many dimensions of contemporary glass."

FOLLO Washbasin System Designed by WMD

FOLLO: Washbasin System Designed by WMD

WMD studio announced the debut of their first premium product line for the bathroom sector.

FOLLO is a combination of modern aesthetic and underlying function.

This innovative washbasin system is an ideal solution for both commercial and domestic applications.

With a flexible range of units and sizes for different environments, FOLLO is perfect for modular system requirements or as a single sculptured showpiece.

The linear aesthetics naturally follow the soft contours of the surface to create a stunning and unique visual impact, particularly suited to the environment and needs of style conscious hotels, clubs and cutting-edge developments.

Handcrafted form follows function; the design features shallow grooves to reduce standing water and Follo also allows toiletries to be placed on a surface which is easy to wipe down.

The free flow design incorporates a generous bowl area to reduce splash, combining with a unique integrated drainage system within a slimline unit measuring under 7cm in height.

Feel Planet Earth Cifial Design Award

Feel Planet Earth: Cifial Design Award

Feel Planet Earth, Cifial Design Award, is organized with the aim of promoting design, both as a culture, and as a tool, capable of proposing innovative solutions to man's approach to his social and natural environment.

The object of this contest is to promote the exchange of ideas and spread the values of design, offering new approaches to tasks products and services, visualizing, interpreting technologies, etc.

Its theme arises from the day-to-day concerns around the huge transformations that are presently taking place in our society economy culture and environment, and which the present paradigms seem to be unable to deal with.

The goal of this award is to identify and disseminate design contributions to help build a path towards sustainability on issues that we all face, and must urgently discuss.

It will be run on a two-phase selection based firstly on an Abstract submission and then a further development for those selected.

The theme for the 2008 Award will be the over-dependence on non- renewable sources of energy in the current pattern of development.

Any design work on this issue, whether a vehicle, a public transport service, a cooking device or a lighting system, a water pump or any other practical or theoretical contribution, as well as a synopsis from an MsC or PhD dissertation, can be proposed.

IIDEX Neocon Canada Environment Keynote Dr Michael Braungart

IIDEX Neocon Canada Environment Keynote: Dr. Michael Braungart

Rethink the green strategy? If you're Dr. Michael Braungart it is important to think beyond just the product or process.

Instead he advocates the need to examine the entire green paradigm to factor the cradle-to-cradle cycle.

His innovative study will create stimulating discussion in how "green" design principals are executed and can create economic, ecological and social value.

Michael Braungart is a German chemist who advocates that humans can have a positive ecological footprint by redesigning systems, which support life.

A former Greenpeace activist who once lived in a tree as protest, he is now a professor of process engineering.

He is behind the influential 2002 bestseller, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way we Think Things, co-authored with William McDonough.

Braungart has helped establish a framework for the next Industrial Revolution, and he works directly with multinationals, such as Nike, Aveda and Shaw Contract, and smaller entrepreneurs to help them reinvent manufacturing processes.

He was instrumental in developing the award-winning compostable fabric line Climatex Lifecycle.

Innovation Award for Reuse Design

Innovation Award for Reuse Design

If all soft drinks were packaged in reusable containers, in one year we could prevent 1.1 million tons of CO2 emissions from entering the environment.

These figures are calculations put forward by the German Packaging Institute in Berlin.

Mr Clemens Stroetman, administrator for Initiative Mehrweg (SIM), quoted from Poet Ludwig Uhland's ballad, "Glass is the Earth's Pride and Fortune," as he awarded the 2008 innovative prize for reuse product design.

The prize went to the Schloer Bodensee Fruchtsaft AG.

The company had developed an aesthetically pleasing but practical glass bottle, lighter in weight and more compact.

The award's sponsor German Association to Help the Environment and SIM, hope the hotel and restaurant industry will embrace the use of reuseable container designs.

The bottle from Lake Constance is one example - from millions of other glass bottles - of German regional and worldwide renewable resources for the beverage industry.
