Label Japans New Groove

Japan's New Groove

Ninjas don't wear sweatshirts.

Yoshiyuki Ogata, a Tokyo designer whose street fashion is stocked in upscale L.A. and London boutiques, was living in Seattle in the 1990s when he discovered a peculiar phenomenon.

His friends overseas, Americans as well as other nationalities, were proud of their roots, while his Japanese mates tended to denigrate their own culture and idolize anything foreign.

Ogata couldn't understand the impulse.

Yes, he had traveled the world and had majored in international business.

But Ogata had a black belt in karate.

He loved the exquisite craftsmanship of Japan's artisans.

So when he returned to Tokyo and started his own clothing line, Ogata took his fashion cues from the rich traditions of local design, not from some Parisian or New York City atelier.

Today, instead of a hip-hop hoodie, Ogata wears a sleek hooded jacket that zips up to show only the eyes, a self-made creation inspired by what ninjas used to wear during their stealthy missions."

Technology Transfer is an Answer for Design Firms Fighting Economic Slowdown

Technology Transfer is an Answer for Design Firms Fighting Economic Slowdown

From energy efficient homes in the US to water treatment systems in Iraq, the latest innovation reaching the market is the result of technology transfer initiatives.

National research facilities are teaming with small design firms to meet their development goals and drive innovation.

The "meeting of the minds" characteristic of technology transfer partnerships allows successful product development to occur.

Opportunities for viable product development are growing as demand for innovative goods increases.

According to Federal Lab Consortium Chair J. Scott Deiter, "More than 250 laboratories and research centers...conduct over $100 billion in research and development annually...the effort, desire, and creativity of these scientists is unparalleled."

Budget plans by the U.S. Government for the 2009 Fiscal Year show that science and technology programs are receiving considerably increased funding.

Economic slowdown has caused increased commodity prices and fierce competition internationally, but manufacturing firms who pursue technology transfer initiatives reap profits by responding to the demand for "technology transfer professionals".

Metabolix Grows Bioplastics in Switchgrass

Bioplastics company Metabolix has devised what it hopes is an efficient way to manufacture its product: growing grass.

The company on Monday said that it has has created "significant amounts" of its bioplastic by growing it in the leaves of switchgrass.

Mirel bioplastic, called polyhydroxybutyrate (PHA), are biodegradeable alternatives to petroleum plastic.

A manufacturer of gardening stakes is using the plastic and it can be used for credit cards or containers of consumer products.

Design Rules Set for Safer Student Transport

Design Rules Set for Safer Student Transport

The Canadian Standards Association on Wednesday has made public its requirements for a new class of vehicle intended as a safer alternative for transporting students to extracurricular events.

The new vehicle, called a multi-functional activity bus, would have many of the safety features of a regular school bus, but would be more compact, cheaper and designed for transporting smaller groups.

Nothing exactly like this is currently on the road.

According to CSA spokesman Anthony Toderian, the bus could be used in place of "non-conforming" vehicles that do not meet school-bus standards - such as the 15-passenger van involved in the horrific January crash that killed eight people in Bathurst - but have increasingly been used for transporting students.
