 Stefano Marzano Tackles Future Healthcare Challenges at Icsid World Design CongressWouldn't our health be dramatically improved if our healthcare system were built on maintaining a balanced lifestyle as opposed to responding to illness?This may soon be achievable as Stefano Marzano, CEO and Chief Creative Director of Philips Design presents a concept healthcare system that is based on probable socio-cultural and technological forecasts at the Icsid World Design Congress. Taking place in Singapore from 23-25 November, the congress will see leading designers proposing revolutionary design solutions to tackle some of the challenges the world of 2050 will face. While the 20th Century brought great strides in medical treatment and widespread health provision, it also brought to light new problems - obesity levels, heart disease, diabetes and aging population, to name a few. What will happen next? Stefano proposes to create a scenario based on the phases of a person's life to illustrate the type of challenges faced in creating an appropriate, sustainable system for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Design Council and British Chambers of Commerce launch Business Growth ClubsIn the first phase of the programme, 12 Design Council workshops will offer help to up to 300 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).Business Growth Clubs have been developed by the BCC and are designed to get SMEs growing despite the difficult economic environment. The aim is to bring together like-minded business people and give them direct access to real and practical support from industry professionals. The Design Council workshop aims to help SMEs design their way out of the downturn by introducing strategic design thinking to help solve every day business problems, to use design to be more innovative and competitive and to teach participants that design is an investment, not a cost. The message is that when times are tough it is change, dynamism and vitality - not battening down the hatches - which are the keys to success. The series of informal hands-on workshops will roll out from the end of October. "This is all about designing out of a downturn," said David Kester, Chief Executive of the Design Council. "Companies that invested in design and R&D during the last recession re-invented themselves and came out stronger.  Red Dot Award Design Concept 2009 Sees New Record Number of EntriesIt came as a surprise in the face of the global crisis: the jury of the red dot award: design concept was enthusiastic about the number of design concepts submitted as well as their high quality.While they received 1,906 entries from 49 nations last year, this year 2,723 concepts from 56 nations had to be assessed. In the 20 different categories of the red dot award: design concept 2009, the jury determined 224 winners in total; 208 concepts received the award for high design quality, the red dot, and 16 entrants managed to win the sought-after red dot: best of the best.
