 KSC Proposes New Major in Sustainable DesignKeene State College is adding a new baccalaureate program in Sustainable Product Design and Innovation (SPDI).The four-year, pre-professional SPDI curriculum will integrate the social and scientific aspects of sustainability concerns into the current Product Design and Development option in Technology Studies. This option gives students a solid foundation in the artistic, scientific, and technical aspects of product design and draws on five disciplines - art, management, mathematics, safety, and industrial/product design - to teach design theory and practice, material sciences, production processes, digital technology, and the quantitative and qualitative issues of sustainability and business practices. "We know that innovation happens at the boundaries between disciplines," says Lisa Hix, principal faculty member for the new SPDI program. "Courses in the arts and safety help with ergonomic design; math and management courses help students understand the economic implications of a new product." Integrating sustainability values into KSC's current Product Design and Development program will prepare students for engagement in the new "lean and green" global economy.  FuturArc Prize 2009: International Design Competition for Green ArchitectureEco-friendly architects and architecture students have a shot at US$33,000 from the FuturArc Award, an international contest for green construction design.First, candidates may design an office building and urban park on a real plot of land west of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Second, they can create a community center for a green future in their home country, presenting the form, space and activities suitable to the project synopsis, construction site and local climate. An international judging panel of green building experts will choose the winners based on their strategy and use of green technology towards a user-friendly architecture in line with their sociocultural background.  Paolo Pininfarina: New Chairman of Car Design FirmPaolo Pininfarina has been named to replace his late brother as chairman of Pininfarina SpA, the family Italian car design firm that counts Ferraris and Alfa Romeos among its creations.Pininfarina, who was deputy chairman, replaces Andrea who died in a road accident last week, the company said in a statement.
