Material World: Tomorrow's Products From Today's Materials

Material World will be a feature exhibit at IIDEX/NeoCon Canada this September, showcasing an exhibit of the latest new and sustainable materials from emerging Canadian companies.

In addition, an interactive feature exhibit exclusively designed and developed by Material Connexion for IIDEX/NeoCon Canada, Tomorrow's Products From Today's Materials, will be presented.

Tomorrow's Products from Today's Materials feature exhibit is based on a calendar theme with each of the 52 weeks representing a material or a product derived from that material.

The exhibit will explore a wide variety of design themes: sustainability, integrated technology, nanotechnology, and many more.

The majority of the conceptual products will be drawn from the world of interiors and furniture, but will also include other design disciplines as some of the best ideas come from unfamiliar territory.

The impact of materials on our lives cannot be understated.

A decision to use a material that is eco-friendly - be it one that produces less material waste, is itself made from materials that would have otherwise been discarded, or one that creates a more efficient product - can have a far-reaching effect.

Frog Design Debuts Premier Issue of Print Magazine

Frog Design Debuts Premier Issue of Print Magazine

frog design, a global innovation firm, announced the debut of design mind, a print magazine that will engage readers in a conversation about business, technology, and design.

The magazine will launch together with a website featuring a video series, a blog network, and interactive content from frog's exclusive speaker series events.

Written by frog designers, technologists, and strategists, design mind articles provide the design and innovation community with perspectives on industry trends, emerging technologies, and global consumer culture.

The magazine, to be published three times per year, will also feature interviews with high-profile thought leaders along with contributions from external writers, designers, and photographers.

"frog has a 40-year history of pioneering new approaches to innovation and design that gives us a unique point of view.

With design mind, we have a tremendous opportunity to publicly share experiences and ideas that are relevant to senior executives and designers alike," said Doreen Lorenzo, president of frog design.

"Our goal with design mind is to open up new channels for frog to communicate our thought leadership in a highly visual and dynamic way.

The magazine and website allow us to engage with diverse audiences and ultimately enhance our industry's influence," said Tim Leberecht, vice president of marketing and communications for frog design.

Polar Opposites Mediating the Space Between Positions in Design

Polar Opposites: Mediating the Space Between Positions in Design

The Industrial Designers Society of America's (IDSA) 2008 National Conference "Polar Opposites: Mediating the Space Between Positions in Design" will be held September 10 - 13 at the Arizona Biltmore, Phoenix.

The conference promises to be a truly newsworthy event, focusing on the many polar issues critical to all designers as they attempt to design with a goal of effectively changing existing situations into preferred ones, such as mass consumption versus minimizing footprint, quarterly profits driven by investor demands versus evolving needs of consumers, design thinking versus design as execution of products and services, women: the most powerful consumers in the world, but under-represented in the design field, designing to meet the challenges of the Boomer market when we've been designing for consumers aged 15-35, and designing with Asia and for Asia.

Featured speakers will be as fascinating and diverse as Marti Barletta, author of the book Marketing to Women and co-author of Trends with Tom Peters, and Richard Earl, keeper of the historical heritage of his grandfather, Harley J. Earl, who assembled and completed the first automotive design department at General Motors.

Emily Pilloton, founder of Project H Design, will share how her global nonprofit organization supports, inspires, and delivers humanitarian and life-improving product design solutions and Wade Lukianow, VP of Plexus' Boulder Design Center will discuss his team's role in Plexus' implementation of Concept Convergence philosophies, improving customer experience and product outcomes.

Siemens PLM Software Addresses Needs Identified in Global Design Strategies Research Report

Siemens PLM Software Addresses Needs Identified in Global Design Strategies Research Report

Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today responded to the findings of a series of Industry Sector Insight reports unveiled by Aberdeen Group.

The reports were based on the findings of benchmark research entitled "Profitable Design Chains: Global Product Design Comes of Age" which identifies three key Best-in-Class themes for global product development initiatives -- protecting product intellectual property, designing in parallel, and coordinating global design teams.

To further this research, Aberdeen looked at the global design strategies of five vertical industries and examined what these themes mean to each industry.

Released in June 2008 and spanning Aerospace & Defense, Automotive, Consumer Packaged Goods, High Tech & Electronics and Machinery industries, the research identified key strategic initiatives and challenges specific to each industry and how manufacturers can best implement global design strategies to address these initiatives.
