![]() From Now to Eternity: Plastic in DesignFrom Now To Eternity is a celebration of and debate around design, with a focus on one material: plastic.Plastic is with us virtually from now to eternity: impervious to bacteria, acid, salt, rust, breakage and, in some cases, able to withstand heat, plastic is something of a miracle substance. One hundred years ago, when it was first invented, no one could have anticipated that plastic would present one of our biggest recycling challenges. Pioneering arts consultancy Arts Co is commissioning ten leading contemporary designers and design collectives to celebrate plastic through their work and look at ways to re-think our growing mountains of discarded plastic. Their ingenious creations will be on display at From Now To Eternity, an exhibition launching during the 2008 London Design Festival and continuing through Frieze Art Fair, at the Biscuit Building in London's East End. The designers will show how plastic's versatility - transparent or opaque, hard or pliant, able to take on a myriad of colours and forms - can serve their creativity. Committee, Stuart Haygarth, Raw Edges and FAT take a witty, playful and imaginative approach: Committee will build on their improbable towers of household objects to create extraordinary designs, while Haygarth's ebullient plastic chandelier is made from 1,000 exploded party poppers. event (ended) current design events more info www.lon... ![]() World First Eco Pedal Helps Reduce Fuel ConsumptionNissan Motor unveiled the ECO Pedal - a world first technology - designed to assist drivers to become more fuel-efficient.When the eco-pedal system is on, each time the driver steps on the accelarator, a counter push-back control mechanism is activated if the system detects excess pressure, helping to inform the driver that they could be using more fuel than required. An eco-driving indicator integrated into the instrument panel feeds the driver with real-time fuel consumption levels to help improve his/her driving behavior. The ECO Pedal system can be turned on or off according to the driver's preference. The ECO Pedal system is fed data on the rate of fuel consumption and transmission efficiency during acceleration and cruising, and then calculates the optimum acceleration rate. When the driver exerts excess pressure on the accelerator, the system counteracts with the pedal push-back control mechanism. more World First Eco Pedal Helps Reduce Fuel Consumption added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Science and Engineering Mimicking Natural DesignsFifteen years ago, an economics major looked through a microscope at diatoms, a type of algae, and was blown away by the beauty of design.Over hundreds of millions of years, these organisms have evolved elegant solutions to challenges such as protection, movement, and reducing drag. The most famous product mimicking natural designs is velcro, designed by a Swiss scientist after he picked burrs from his dog and looked at them under the microscope. While velcro is useful, the point of the article is that some biomimicks could be environmentally friendly. For example, many animals emit light and do so with little energy loss, compared to the highly inefficient incandescent bulb. more www.met... (57) added by Levent OZLER |
