Label Serious Fun for Bernhardt Design

Serious Fun for Bernhardt Design

The artistic and creative collaboration between Jaime Hayon and Dutch photographer Nienke Klunder has fueled many of Hayon's celebrated projects but Serious Fun is their first one as equal design partners.

Together they have created a playful new fabric collection for the American furniture company Bernhardt Design.

The play on words captured in the collection name "Serious Fun" served as their guiding criteria, as they approached the project.

The objective was to design patterns that were playful and fun, while at the same time could be taken seriously and withstand the test of time.

"We wanted to create a perfect mixture between the seriousness of Bernhardt Textiles and the more challenging and louder artistic character that is our focus.

We felt we could incorporate some colourful, happy and fresh ideas into the existing collection, but at the same time keep the designs classic in a way, so they would fit in anywhere," states Hayon.

Regarding their approach Klunder says, "We started to create funny fresh patterns and use colour combinations which were a bit more daring.

Colour was the key: basta with the browns, green greys, blue greys and beiges.

We used reds, greens, blues and teals, as vivid as the weaving technique would allow, and they became our messengers to transmit vitality without being distracting or too loud."

Japan Car Designs for the Crowded Globe

Japan Car: Designs for the Crowded Globe

The world of Japanese car design set against the backdrop of Japan's unique culture is explored in a sophisticated new exhibition at the Science Museum, from 29 November 2008.

Japan Car, an exploration of the car as a "mobile cell", has been conceived by two world class names from outside the world of automobile: Kenya Hara, the man responsible for much of the success of Muji, and Shigeru Ban, the distinguished Japanese architect currently designing a new satellite gallery in Metz for Paris' Pompidou Centre.

The exhibition, sponsored by seven Japanese car manufactures, shows how Japanese car design reflects the "soil and the spirit of Japan", shown through concept cars and special home market models.

Japan Car explores three themes while examining the future of mobility in cities.

Japan, being both highly innovative and densely populated, can be seen as the driving force behind transport solutions for twenty-first century cities.

As an exhibition of cars, alongside Japanese bonsai, art and design, Japan Car will display 14 unusual cars from the past decade and conceptual models, including the Nissan PIVO2 and Toyota i-REAL.

When entering the exhibition, visitors will be greeted by an intriguing display of small model cars juxtaposed against live bonsai trees, the model cars taking the place of the natural stones which the Japanese often use to accompany bonsai trees.

EcoFly Helps Designers with Eco-benchmark

EcoFly Helps Designers with Eco-benchmark

Designers and manufacturers will have a new tool to benchmark the eco-performance of their products and comply with upcoming EU directives.

The European Commission's Framework Directive on Energy Using Products (EUP) is due to appear in early 2009 and will set minimum eco-design standards for a range of parameters over the entire lifecycle of the product.

The legislation will cover design through to manufacturing, use and disposal.

This includes energy consumption, water use, air emissions and waste embedded in the product, produced by the product and consumed during use.

"The EuP will have wide ranging impacts and manufacturers should be integrating the EuP into design teams today.

With the standards progressively coming into force next year, design teams need to understand the proposed minimum standards for their products today."

Mocha Launches X-Mix Coasters

Mocha Launches X-Mix Coasters

The X-Mix Coasters are a unique set of dual purpose coasters that have just been launched by Mocha.

Available in several colour combinations, X-Mix are bold accessories to liven up your table.

What sets them apart from ordinary coasters, though, is that they also double up as a noughts and crosses game.

The cross is removable from the coaster to create ten playing pieces - providing some light entertainment for your coffee break or an interesting talking point when friends are over.

The X-Mix Coasters can also be made wet and will then stick to smooth surfaces such as tiles and mirrors.

They might even be a fun accessory to have in the bathroom.

X-Mix Coasters are manufactured in rubber and come as a set of five.

NIKE Considered Design Products That Redefine Performance and Sustainability

NIKE Considered Design: Products That Redefine Performance and Sustainability

NIKE announced Nike Considered Design, its latest products which combine sustainability principles with the newest innovations for sport.

While Nike has delivered consumers Considered products for several years, for the first time, Nike Considered Design will be featured in all of Nike's six key categories: basketball, running, football, women's training, men's training and sportswear, as well as in tennis and All Condition Gear.

For example, Nike's best selling running shoe, the Pegasus, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is the first pinnacle running shoe to be Nike Considered Design.

"As we look at how we design and develop products and run our global business, it's not enough to be solving the challenges of today," said President and CEO Mark Parker.

"We are designing for the sustainable economy of tomorrow, and for us that means using fewer resources, more sustainable materials and renewable energy to produce new products."

The goal of Nike Considered Design is to create performance innovation products that minimize environmental impact by reducing waste throughout the design and development process, use environmentally preferred materials, and eliminate toxics.

Nike designers are now expected to make smart, sustainable design choices at the start of their creative process which has led to Nike's most extensive Considered Design range of product to date.
