Label Cars Will Drive Themselves by 2050 According to Design Conference

Cars Will Drive Themselves by 2050, According to Design Conference

Turin, 2008's official World Design Capital, played host to the highly successful Interior Motives Europe conference at the Santa Stefano Hotel from the 17 - 19 June.

Former Lancia design chief, Michael Robinson gave one of the most impassioned speeches of the event, focusing on the forces shaping the future of automotive design.

Among his predictions was the startling claim that, by 2050, cars will be driving themselves.

According to Robinson, who is also the founder of start-up design firm Crossover Creative Consortium, advances in automotive technology will allow OEMs to create cars that are able to drive autonomously.

Such innovations will allow for a massively reduced physical safety kit count, translating into lower weight and therefore lower emissions, as well as a reduction in traffic accidents, which usually occur due to human error.

The biggest issue to emerge from the event was the industry's move towards zero-impact cars, with lighter materials, better aerodynamics and fewer elements in vehicles all representing steps towards designing the ultimate ecological vehicle.

The Domus Academy Spring Semester 09 in Business Design

The Domus Academy Spring Semester 09 in Business Design

Domus Academy (DA) announced a unique semester study abroad design program that starts in January 2009 exploring the reciprocity and the influences between enterprise and creativity and between managerial organization and innovation, showing that businesses can often generate more original forms of creativity and that creativity itself requires increasingly complex and articulated managerial and administration models.

This new semester program, based on the acclaimed Master of the same name uses the "Made in Italy" model (based on the production of beautiful and well-made objects) to complement the Anglo-Saxon one.

The combination of project culture and entrepreneurial skill helps update the model of manager / designer co-direction as it focuses on communicating a particular vision.

The interdisciplinary nature of the DA program puts students in direct contact with the productive world of enterprise and companies and inspires research project themes to explore and to design.

Visits to Milan area industry workshops factories, shops and showrooms, as well as the International Furniture Fair (Salone del Mobile) are also included.

The program's ultimate goal is to prepare professionals who are capable of overseeing project, production, and distribution in design driven companies.

Deadline for application is November 1st, 2008.
