Designline: Brief History and Development of the Design and Its Forms

So-called design research has come into being in recent years, particularly at international level.

The designers speaking at congresses, symposia, workshops etc. try to present themselves as saviours of the world by tying in a wide range of diverse problems.

It is indisputable that design must naturally be understood and practised in an inter-, multi-, cross- and even transdisciplinary way.

However, what is specific about design and the global meaning of design is based on cultural interactions and manifests itself in its respective products.

Among all these endeavours it should be made especially clear what actually accounts for the lasting and increasing fascination with design: the design of things and thereby also their forms.

At the beginning of the 20th century there was talk everywhere in the German-speaking world of "Formgestaltung" (putting the emphasis on the design of form), a term which in the meantime has become largely obsolete.

However, it is also undisputed that design undergoes a process of permanent change.

The transition from the functional view of objects to their semantic interpretation is currently fashionable everywhere.

However, discourses about objects must become still more precise.

AutoDesignNight London

AutoDesignNight London

AutoDesignNight re-affirmed its place at the epicentre of car design last night at its exclusive, high-profile networking evening in central London.

The event, which took place at The Island nightclub in Charing Cross, was attended by 200 of the world's leading automotive designers celebrating the opening of this year's London Motor Show.

The evening was marked by the presentation of a retrospective award to Martin Smith, one of the leading lights of the automotive design industry and the man behind the iconic Audi Quattro, as well as many other celebrated automotive designs.

Smith, who is currently executive design director for Ford of Europe, began his career at Porsche in 1973 before moving to Audi in 1977, where he spent the majority of the 1980s and 1990s.

The event was supported by a number of the industry's leading suppliers, including the advance design and pre-production concept builders - Concept Group International.

Joe Molloy, chief executive of Concept Group, presented the award - an oil painting of Smith's own Austin Healey - and noted: "We are delighted to play a role in this leading event for the automotive design community.

It is extraordinary to see so many notable design leaders here tonight and I feel immensely privileged to present this award to Martin."

Treepac Essential Designs Award-Winning Sustainable Concept

Treepac: Essential Designs Award-Winning Sustainable Concept

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, paper products are the biggest single component of community waste, with 85 million tons generated in 2006.

Though much of this is recycled, the sheer volume compelled the team at product development consultancy Essential to examine their own consumption habits.

Frustrated by their findings, the team devised a solution-the Treepac.

Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) judges took notice and honored the concept with a Silver International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the Ecodesign category.

Treepac is a reusable shipping container intended to replace cardboard boxes.

The structure is made entirely of sustainable wood-based polymer cellulose acetate, Treepac is used like cardboard packaging but is designed to enable and encourage people and companies to improve their environmental footprint.

The more times each pack is used, the greater its positive effect on the environment.
