The Selection Has Been Made for the International Exhibition of the BIO 21

The international Selection Committee of the 21st Biennial of Industrial Design met 8-9 May 2008 at the Architecture Museum of Ljubljana at Fuzine Castle in Ljubljana.

For the first time in the history of the Biennial, the selection of works for the exhibition was made by an independent international Selection Committee.

They applied a uniform set of criteria as they examined all the entries that had been received in response to the international Call for Entries for BIO 21.

The seven respected experts who make up the international Selection Committee made a rigorous selection of the best in the areas of industrial design, visual communications, and design concepts.

All entrants applying to the international Call for Submissions will receive the results of the selection process for BIO 21 exhibition shortly.

The selected works will be exhibited from 2 October to 2 November 2008 at the Architecture Museum of Ljubljana at Fuzine Castle in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Power to the Pedal Winners Announced

Power to the Pedal Winners Announced

Design 21: Social Design Network announced the top three winners of the Power to the Pedal online design competition this week from 222 entries worldwide.

The online social design network, which promotes better design for the greater good through its members and non-profit partners, challenged designers to create a new bicycle accessory or add-on for existing bicycles that would improve the cycling experience and promote the use of bicycles as a primary means of transportation.

The competition was open for 12 weeks and attracted entries from 41 countries and over 200 designers.

Designs were judged by a panel of DESIGN 21 judges based on overall effectiveness, creativity, practicality, aesthetics and how well it responds to environmental concerns.

Members of DESIGN 21 were also invited to vote online for their favorite design for the Most Popular award.

The first prize was awarded to Ben Decherd from Portland, Oregon for his Pedal Power Pack design.

The Pedal Power Pack is a small power supply unit that recharges by attaching a bicycle and using the energy from the moving bicycle and pedals.

The design utilized aspects from a stationary bike design and a portable power supply device and offers consumers a way to power small everyday electronic devices during a power outage.

Absolute Black Matrix Polymer for Industrial Design

Absolute Black: Matrix Polymer for Industrial Design

Thanks to research activities performed by Grado Zero Espace on the integration of nanoparticles into different matrices, a new series of prototypes characterized by particular aesthetic effects has been developed.

This job gave birth to "Absolute Black" brand, a process that allows to obtain various polymeric materials, containing variable percentages of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) and other micro sized fillers, able to absorb very well all the visible spectrum radiations.

Our eyes are able to perceive only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum between 700nm (red) and 400nm (violet) called visible light.

Sunlight is white because composed by an overlapping of all the frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum; while black is defined a material able to absorb completely all the visible radiations, without reflecting anyone.

The results, obtained by a proper dispersion of this black pigment into a polymeric matrix using suitable techniques to guarantee the greatest homogeneity and stability, was an article able to absorb very well all the visible radiations with an excellent aesthetic effect.

Besides, bulk dispersion allows a good workability of the final product simplifying the treatments post abrasion and permitting to customize brightness and opacity effects according with the chosen application.

Absolute Black is black inside and outside and, also after its scratching, it maintains its homogeneous black colour.

Chairik Chair with New Polished-aluminium Armrests

Chairik Chair with New Polished-aluminium Armrests

Chairs with armrests are more sought-after than ever.

To meet this demand, Erik Magnussen has designed new armrests for Engelbrecht's Chairik chair.

With several hundred thousand sold worldwide, Chairik by Engelbrechts is one of the most popular Danish chairs.

And in recent years, models with armrests have become increasingly popular in homes and workplaces.

This has led Engelbrechts to introduce a model with new designer armrests in polished aluminium.

The designer Erik Magnussen has spent a lot of time perfecting this design.

He was inspired by the soft lines of Chairik's veneer: these are extended by the armrests, but without sacrificing the firm support that users expect from a chair with armrests.

Even with the new armrests, the chairs can still be stacked, so users can quickly move them out of the way if needed.

Indeed, daily use was carefully considered when designing Chairik.

For example, the veneer has been given a layer of silky, matt melamine, which creates a strong surface and makes the chair extremely resistant.
