![]() Japan Airlines Nabs Two Good Design Awards for 2009Japan Airlines has been awarded two Good Design Awards this year.The winning products are JAL Shell Flat Neo - the airline's newest international executive class seat, and Soraben - the innovative "resort-feel" economy class in-flight meal served onboard flights to Guam. Sponsored annually by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO), the Good Design Award is Japan's only comprehensive design evaluation and commendation system, and is a mark of true quality. The JAL Shell Flat Neo, awarded under the category of Society , is a JAL original product that features the popular shell-shape seat. Based on customer feedback and the concept of Universal Design, practical and aesthetic enhancements were made to its predecessor, resulting in the new JAL Shell Flat Neo which boasts a bigger size personal TV screen and increased stowage area among other improvements. It was inaugurated in August 2008 on the Tokyo (Narita) - New York route (JL005/006), followed by service to San Francisco and will soon be available on routes to Los Angeles and Chicago by 25th of this month. ![]() Design The 4th Bin WinnersValiant Technology announced the winners of the "Design The 4th Bin" competition.The competition sought ideas and concepts from around the globe for a public domain e-waste logo and a licensed collection bin for e-waste. Initially conceived in response to New York City Local Law 13, which prohibits electronic waste disposal in the regular trash, the concept of the 4th bin has ignited a response from the design community and ecologically conscious firms around the world. The respondents ranged from design students to internationally recognized industrial designers and architects. First prize for the collection bin went to Springtime of Amsterdam. First prize for the e-waste logo went to Two Twelve of New York City. There were three runner up projects for the collection bin, Baharash Bagherian of London, AM/PM Studios of New Hampshire, and Alistair Bramley. ![]() Nissan EPORO Robot Car: Collision-free Driving by Mimicking Fish BehaviorIn 2008, it was the flight of the bumblebee that inspired Nissan's Biomimetic Car Robot Drive "BR23C" concept.In 2009, fish-inspired technology takes center stage in Nissan's new Nissan "EPORO" robot car concept, which is designed to travel in a group of like-vehicles, mimicking the behavioral patterns of a school of fish in avoiding obstacles without colliding with each other. Nissan will demonstrate this breakthrough technology with a group of six EPOROs when they make their world debut at the CEATEC JAPAN 2009, October 6 - 10 at the Makuhari Messe. In addition to displaying the futuristic EPORO, Nissan Senior Vice President Minoru Shinohara will deliver a keynote speech, titled "The Future of the Automobile with Electric Vehicles and Car Robotics Evolution," and participate in a panel discussion on "EV leads to a society of 'All Electrification' and 'All Mobilization.'"
