Label Design Mind Engineering Mind

Design Mind / Engineering Mind

Great products are born of the synergy of the design mind and the engineering mind.

Through cycles of sketching and prototyping, great designer-engineer collaborations have created successful products for more than a century.

Today, the nature of products is changing fast. What will be the new direction?

Join Surya Vanka, Principal Manager, User Experience of Microsoft, on Wednesday, October 6 at 1:00pm EDT as he discusses the new synergistic designer-developer collaborations that are emerging.

Design Mind/Engineering Mind will fuse the design mind's ability to break through established patterns and paradigms, and the engineering mind's ability to optimize and actualize.

CCA Leading by Design Fellows Program

CCA Leading by Design Fellows Program

California College of the Arts announced the May 2010 launch of the Leading by Design Fellows Program, the first executive program of its kind in the United States.

It will blend the traditionally separate domains of business, design, and sustainability into a single, integrated approach, by which professionals can proactively shape the future of their companies, even in a world of limited resources.

CCA has a 100-year tradition of pioneering programs that bridge the arts and society, and the Leading by Design Fellows Program builds on that legacy.

"Unprecedented changes in the world demand a critical shift in business thinking," says CCA Provost Mark Breitenberg.

"A dramatically different paradigm is emerging.

Success and growth are now measured by increases in values, meaning, and sustainability, not simply profitability.

Our goal is to create a dynamic center of ideas and senior leadership by synthesizing design-led innovation, business strategy, and sustainable practices.

In the 21st century, institutions must help people and societies reimagine, reinvent, and redesign the way we live to create a more sustainable world."

Nathan Shedroff, noted experience strategist and chair of CCA's groundbreaking MBA in Design Strategy, says, "This program will provide an immersive, inspiring, and challenging experience.

Our Fellows will be able to think further and faster, with more meaningful and powerful results."

Breathing Bathtub by Li Xi Wins the 3rd Edition of Jump the Gap by Roca

Roca announced the winning project of the 3rd edition of the International Contest "Jump the Gap," chosen from 382 project presentations.

Breathing Bathtub is an innovative concept that turns bathing into a healthier experience for the users and is significantly more efficient in terms of energy and water consumption.

The bathtub is lined with a revolutionary material similar to a sponge.

The material molds itself to the shape of the users, guaranteeing maximum comfort and as a consequence uses less than half the water used normally.

Design for Patient Dignity

Design for Patient Dignity

The Design Council has launched a national design challenge called "Design for Patient Dignity," inviting designers to join forces with manufacturers, service providers and specialist contractors to help eliminate mixed sex accommodation and increase patient privacy and dignity in hospitals.

In partnership with the Department of Health, the Design Council is looking for up to five collaborative design teams, which will be paid a minimum of £25,000 to develop and prototype new approaches.

Teams will be asked to submit credentials and an 800 word summary on how they would approach the challenge, with solutions which would work at ward level, offer good value for money, and take into account the behaviour of hospital staff, patients and their visitors.

The deadline for entries is October 26, 2009.
