Label IIDEX Neocon Canada Environment Keynote Dr Michael Braungart

IIDEX Neocon Canada Environment Keynote: Dr. Michael Braungart

Rethink the green strategy? If you're Dr. Michael Braungart it is important to think beyond just the product or process.

Instead he advocates the need to examine the entire green paradigm to factor the cradle-to-cradle cycle.

His innovative study will create stimulating discussion in how "green" design principals are executed and can create economic, ecological and social value.

Michael Braungart is a German chemist who advocates that humans can have a positive ecological footprint by redesigning systems, which support life.

A former Greenpeace activist who once lived in a tree as protest, he is now a professor of process engineering.

He is behind the influential 2002 bestseller, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way we Think Things, co-authored with William McDonough.

Braungart has helped establish a framework for the next Industrial Revolution, and he works directly with multinationals, such as Nike, Aveda and Shaw Contract, and smaller entrepreneurs to help them reinvent manufacturing processes.

He was instrumental in developing the award-winning compostable fabric line Climatex Lifecycle.

Innovation Award for Reuse Design

Innovation Award for Reuse Design

If all soft drinks were packaged in reusable containers, in one year we could prevent 1.1 million tons of CO2 emissions from entering the environment.

These figures are calculations put forward by the German Packaging Institute in Berlin.

Mr Clemens Stroetman, administrator for Initiative Mehrweg (SIM), quoted from Poet Ludwig Uhland's ballad, "Glass is the Earth's Pride and Fortune," as he awarded the 2008 innovative prize for reuse product design.

The prize went to the Schloer Bodensee Fruchtsaft AG.

The company had developed an aesthetically pleasing but practical glass bottle, lighter in weight and more compact.

The award's sponsor German Association to Help the Environment and SIM, hope the hotel and restaurant industry will embrace the use of reuseable container designs.

The bottle from Lake Constance is one example - from millions of other glass bottles - of German regional and worldwide renewable resources for the beverage industry.

Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon

Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon

The 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon made its world premiere at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, in Monterey, California on 15 August 2008.

The new CTS Sport Wagon has a distinctive and dynamic presence.

The first view of the car's intricately sculpted rear profile demonstrates Cadillac's commitment to cutting edge styling and its "Art and Science" design philosophy, so successfully implemented on the CTS luxury sport saloon, recently launched in the UK, and the CTS Coupe Concept.

"The addition of this dramatically- designed Sport Wagon is well synchronised with today's changing consumer tastes as a compelling alternative to SUVs or other larger vehicles," says Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager.

"This is an important step in Cadillac's ongoing global expansion, and of course in international markets like Europe, wagons have been and continue to be very significant.

The CTS Sport Wagon is an important expansion to the Cadillac line-up worldwide."

"It's a taut design that not only suggests sleekness, but delivers it," said Clay Dean, global design director for Cadillac.

"Indeed, the drama of the saloon is amplified in the CTS Sport Wagon, as the centreline cue that is part of the exterior and interior is more prominent and plays a stronger role in defining the design at the rear of the vehicle."
