![]() Academy of Art University to Exhibit Classic Cars52nd Annual International Auto Show will feature the largest display of classic cars in show history.San Francisco's Academy of Art University Museum will exhibit approximately 30 cars from the 1930s. The classics were selected for the show by the University's Industrial Design Department Director Tom Matano. "I picked the best examples of different European and American makers for the show," Matano said. "My personal favorite is the French 1937 Delage. It is the most elegant car." Matano, a designer at Mazda for 20 years before joining the faculty at the University eight years ago, put together the exhibit based on compatibility of design, type and color. Most, but not all of the collection is garaged in the museum of the university's Industrial Design Department on Van Ness Avenue. upcoming event Nov 26 - Dec 2, 2009 United States view on map more upcoming events design directory Academy of Art University > Design Education added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Jaguar Design Chief Says Time for Auto Maker to Grow UpIt's time for Jaguar Cars to "grow up" and stand on its own four wheels, the auto maker's top designer says."We're not going to be coddled by this big corporation anymore," Ian Callum says of Ford Motor, which sold the iconic British brand, along with Land Rover, to India's Tata Motors Ltd. last year for $2.3 billion. In some ways, Jaguar has returned to its roots as a niche vehicle maker known for elegant styling and understated luxury. Now, with an "entrepreneurial spirit" driving the company, Callum says it is time to once again play to the brand's strengths and think outside the box. "We all know the best way to survive at the moment is innovation," he says. more wardsau... (21) added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Design Is the Key to Detroit's FutureIn the 1920s, Alfred Sloan, who was the president of General Motors at the time, committed the automaker to the annual model change. But today, model changes are far less frequent than annual, and a recently released economic research paper argues that Detroit automakers have suffered because of it. Detroit's share of the auto market fell from roughly 73 percent in 1996 to 47 percent in 2008. Written by three economists at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business, in Richmond, Va., and published by the Journal of Business Research, "Non-Price Determinants of Automotive Demand: Restyling Matters Most" argues that Detroit has lost market share because it does not change its cars often enough. more wheels.... ![]() T.27: All-electric Three-seater City CarGordon Murray Design and Zytek Automotive announce an all-electric three-seater city car, made possible through a £4.5m investment from the government-backed Technology Strategy Board. With a total cost of £9m, the new research and development project will allow the consortium to develop four prototypes by February 2011. "As we head towards the new industrial revolution brought about by rising energy costs and concern over the effects of greenhouse gases, we at Gordon Murray Design feel proud to be working with the Technology Strategy Board in helping the UK play a leading role in tackling the issues we all face," said Professor Gordon Murray, Chief Executive and Technical Director of Gordon Murray Design. "More often than not the UK has been responsible for innovative concepts and technologies only to have the end benefits seen abroad. In this case, we're all working together to keep the technology and the production in this country." The T.27 will be the world's most efficient electric car due to its low weight and "clean sheet of paper design." This ambitious target cannot be achieved by applying a conventional stamped steel construction design, nor with a drivetrain using existing gearboxes, motors or batteries. Instead, an entirely fresh approach is proposed; accepting no compromise in safety, performance, range, space, weight, rolling resistance and ride quality. design directory Gordon Murray Design > Car Design Companies added by Levent OZLER |
