Bernu Ice Collaboration Results in Innovative Seating Solution That Defies Convention

Bernu Ice: Collaboration Results in Innovative Seating Solution That Defies Convention

In an industry among the hardest hit in the recent economic downturn, two Canadian design and manufacturing firms have pooled their collective talents to develop an innovative seating solution that defies material convention and challenges design precepts.

Arconas, a leader in seating design and engineering, and Joel Berman Glass Studios, renowned designer and manufacturer of decorative glass for architecture and design, collaborated to develop an unconventional seating product that showcases each company's unique strengths.

The essence of the design is Arconas' Award-winning Bernu seating line, a sleek unit featuring aeronautical shapes and an innovative peg construction system by Canadian Industrial Designer, Davide Tonizzo.

Typically such seats are upholstered, or finished in epoxy-coated steel or polished aluminum.

Bernu Ice features seats and backs made from translucent resin cast in Berman's Valencia texture.

Glasslike in appearance, the surface - embossed resin combined with the dynamic, curvilinear metallic shapes of the Bernu structure lend a jewelry-like quality to the overall design.

"We wanted to create something unique and innovative that promotes design globally", said Joel Berman, founder and president of Joel Berman Glass Studios.

"Collaborating with Arconas allowed us to jointly explore materials and continue our ideas around accessibility of design for the public."

2009 Catalyst Case Study Selections Announced

2009 Catalyst Case Study Selections Announced

The Industrial Designers Society of America and strategy, innovation, and design consultancy RKS announced the 2009 Catalyst case study selections - showcasing design's power to effect positive change.

On the one year anniversary of its unveiling, the new Catalyst case study program announces the 2009 Catalyst case study selections - OXO Good Grips, how one man's quest to create more comfortable kitchen tools for his wife led to a kitchen revolution, Whirlpool Strategy, the bold ambition to infuse an entire corporation with innovation, Black & Decker Dustbuster, the 30 year legacy of the "little vac" that took Black & Decker from the workshop into the home, and Apple iTunes-iPod-iPhone, a study in design integration that forever changed the music industry.

"These insightful examples of design's power to drive results and effect positive change will serve to capture design's legacy and inspire design's future," said Ravi Sawhney, Executive Director of Catalyst and founder and CEO of RKS.

The original Design & Business Catalyst Award, innovated by Sawhney in 2002, went beyond traditional design competitions by recognizing excellence in market and financial performance.

The new Catalyst goes even further by looking at design's positive impact not only on the bottom line, but also on our lives, and on the world itself.

Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2010

Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2010

Brit Insurance Designs of the Year has established itself as a leading showcase of the most innovative and forward thinking designs from around the world, supporting the critically acclaimed Brit Insurance Design Awards.

A number of internationally respected design experts have been invited to nominate up to five projects, each of which in their view, represents the best or the most interesting designs produced or launched in the last year.

A shortlist of around 100 designs - the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year - will be on display at the Design Museum from 12 February and will all go forward to be considered for the Brit Insurance Design Awards.

The Brit Insurance Design Awards celebrate the best of design in seven categories: Architecture, Transport, Graphics, Interactive, Product, Furniture and Fashion.

Last year's winner, the unofficial Barack Obama poster campaign by Shepard Fairey, demonstrated the power that design can have even at grass-roots level.

A high profile judging panel will decide the best entries in each of the seven categories.

Category award-winners will be announced in February and then go forward to compete to be the Brit Insurance Design of the Year 2010, which will be announced at the Awards ceremony in March 2010.

Bruno Everling Wins Bombay Sapphire Global Design Prize

Bruno Everling Wins Bombay Sapphire Global Design Prize

German designer, Bruno Everling has been named the £5,000 winner of the eighth annual Bombay Sapphire Designer Glass Competition, one of the top design contests in the world for up-and-coming designers.

Bombay Sapphire gin is instantly recognisable around the world thanks to its striking, translucent blue glass bottle design.

It's fitting then that each year thousands of emerging designers from around the world enter the Bombay Sapphire Designer Glass Competition by designing a martini cocktail glass inspired by the distinctive blue bottle.

In 2009, nine finalists have been selected for the global final of the Competition held as part of the London Design Festival.

Bruno, who is studying product design at the Schwabisch Gmund school of design near Stuttgart, was awarded the £5,000 prize for "Liquid Sapphire," a glass design which he says was inspired by the "timeless elegance" of Bombay Sapphire and its "fusion of tradition and modernity".

The judges described the winning design as: "a very beautiful, sophisticated glass" with "the potential to be a design classic".
