 First Ever European Design Day: October 1, 2009The Design Council has welcomed the first European Design Day - October 1, 2009, organised by the Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA), and is calling on European nations to work more closely together to improve, harmonise and share information on their design industries.The aim of the European Design Day is to highlight the important role of design in driving innovation in European business, and to campaign for the inclusion of design in the European Commission's innovation agenda and policy-making. "We welcome European Design Day and will continue working with BEDA on ensuring design is embedded in innovation policy at European level," said David Kester, Chief Executive of the Design Council. "The key to this will be more collaboration on research projects that can help inform policy making and ultimately boost investment in design. Governments around the world are increasingly turning to creativity and innovation to help renew economic growth.  2010 Housewares Design Awards: Call For EntriesThe Housewares Design Awards, a design award competition focused on the housewares industry, is accepting entries for its seventh annual competition.The upcoming awards, to be announced at a gala luncheon and ceremony on February 3, 2010, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, will include 13 "Best in Category" Awards and "Best of the Best" Awards at the Gold, Silver and Bronze levels. "The Green House Design Awards," recognizing outstanding products for eco-friendly living, will also be honored at the ceremony.  Products and Packaging Contribute 44 Percent of US Greenhouse Gas EmissionsThe garbage filling the trashcans is also changing our global climate, according to complimentary reports released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Product Policy Institute (PPI).The EPA Report reveals that 37 percent of United States total greenhouse gas emissions result from the provision and use of goods produced within the U.S. "Goods" includes all consumer products and packaging, including building components and passenger vehicles. "Climate action has largely focused on transportation, heating and cooling, and food. Now we know that reducing waste offers the largest opportunity to combat global warming," said Bill Sheehan, PPI executive director. Joshuah Stolaroff, author of the white paper and technical lead on the EPA report, emphasized the importance of improving product design to address climate change.
