![]() Edison Awards 2010: Call for NominationsThe Edison Awards, recognized as one of America's leading innovation awards, is accepting nominations through Dec. 11, 2009 for the 2010 Edison Best New Product Awards and Edison Green Award.The awards are named after Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), the most prolific inventor and innovator in U.S. history. Edison received 1,093 U.S. patents and 1,293 international patents during his lifetime. The awards are among the most elite accolades a company or individual can receive, honoring excellence in new product development, design, marketing and innovation. "New products are the life blood of the U.S. economy. This year, the Edison Awards Steering Committee expects to receive nominations for game-changing products and services that will help drive growth and value creation in our innovation economy," said Sarah Miller Caldicott, Chairperson of the Edison Awards Steering Committee. "The Edison Awards have recognized environmentally friendly products since 1987, and we're very excited this year to begin recognizing organizations that are at the leading edge of Green Technologies with the Edison Green Award. ![]() HTC's Design FutureTaiwanese cellphone maker HTC is reinventing itself again.Three years ago, HTC shifted from an anonymous contract manufacturer to a smart-phone shop, thanks to some eye-catching Windows Mobile devices. Now it is tweaking its image yet again to be more "people-centric," says Claude Zellweger. Zellweger says the latest changes should further raise HTC's profile. "We're carving out a strong design language that's becoming recognizable," he says. HTC's new, people-centric philosophy is evident in its new Android products. The Hero, which debuted in June and will be released by Sprint Nextel in October, features livelier color compared to previous HTC handsets, and custom software called "Sense" that ties social media updates from sites like Twitter to phone contacts. In a research note, Avi Greengart, Current Analysis' research director for consumer devices, called the Sense software "a major step in the right direction." ![]() Anglo-Korean Design Venture Spotlights SharingIt's all about sharing at the designMADE 2009 exhibition hosted by Korea Design Foundation and Korean Cultural Centre UK.The exhibition will be held until Oct. 8, in four galleries: the Korean Cultural Centre UK in London, Tent London, D+ Gallery Seoul and Incheon International Airport Design Cube. The concept behind the exhibition, which take the theme "Sharing by Design," is to "interpret the ordinary things we share in daily life as well as search for new ways to share that which might not be familiar in the present," according to the organizers. more joongan... ![]() Design Council to Launch Patient Dignity CompetitionThe Design Council and the Department of Health are set to launch a new project which will address issues around patient dignity and privacy in hospitals.The Design for Patient Dignity scheme will follow the same structure as the Design Bugs Out competition launched last year, which saw four designers create five new pieces of hospital furniture to combat the spread of infection. However, the new scheme will have a slightly broader format, potentially encompassing service and system design, as well as product design. Design for Patient Dignity will launch on 1 October, when designers will be invited to team up with manufacturers and tackle briefs which will help healthcare staff to manage the hospital environment and to improve patient dignity and privacy. more www.des... ![]() 2009 Clear Choice Awards WinnersThe Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) named the winners of its 20th Annual Clear Choice Awards.This year's Awards recognized twelve consumer product goods (CPG) companies and their achievements in expanding the frontiers of glass packaging design. "Designing and packaging in glass ensures that your product has the competitive edge, as more and more consumers are demanding glass for its pure, recyclable, and premium characteristics," said Joseph Cattaneo, president of the Glass Packaging Institute.
