![]() The Guardian: There's No Such Thing as British DesignIt's the London Design festival this week, and the capital is celebrating its creativity. But if you've been reading the International Herald Tribune or watching the BBC recently, you might wonder if there was much reason for merriment. Last month, design critic and former head of the Design Museum, Alice Rawsthorn, suggested that - at least in some respects - British design isn't what it used to be. Then what happens? Philippe Starck pops on our TV screens in a reality show called Design for Life, with a brief to "save British design". There's just one problem: if there's one thing that the London Design festival repeatedly demonstrates, it's that there is no such thing as British design. more www.gua... ![]() Swedish Design Student Wins Electrolux Design Lab 2009 with His Concept CocoonRickard Hederstierna from Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden is the winner of the Electrolux Design Lab 2009 competition for inventing Cocoon. The winner was announced at finals in London on September 24, at 100% Design London, the UK's leading architecture and design event. "Cocoon" is a sustainable response to the world's growing population and its desire to consume meat and fish. Similar to heating popcorn in a microwave, Cocoon prepares pre-packaged meat and fish dishes by heating muscle cells identified by radio frequency identification (RFID) signals. The signals detect the specific dish and then suggest the required cooking time. This process uses science to create food, lifting a burden on the planet by reducing the need for further intensive farming and fishing. more Swedish Design Student Wins Electrolux Design Lab 2009 with His Concept Cocoon design directory Electrolux Design Lab > Industrial Design Awards added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Robrady Design and DK City Unfold Future of Electric BikesEarlier this month Robrady Design and DK City unveiled their concept db0 folding electric bicycle to a select audience at Eurobike '09, the year's leading bicycle show in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The db0 is the first in a series of three bicycles that ROBRADY has designed for DK City. The bike is scheduled for release to the market in the first quarter of 2010. While ROBRADY is well known for their design prowess in the electric scooter and super bike world, this is their first foray into the electric bicycle market. ROBRADY's CEO / Design Director Robert Brady said his team "took a white page look" at the opportunity and set out to design a series of bikes that would be instantly recognized as the next generation in folding bikes: "The three new db0 bikes embody our mission to design a series of clean, bold, and innovatively simple folding bikes. Our design work promotes the folding mechanism as an integrated piece of the design- a 'focal point' that adds visual value to the bike design unlike it has ever been done before. We don't hide the fact that these bikes fold - we have made it a distinguished characteristic of the series." more Robrady Design and DK City Unfold Future of Electric Bikes design directory Robrady Design > Industrial Design Companies added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Designing Green Urban MobilityWith the number of cars in the world predicted to double to 1.7billion by 2030, the notion of having ecological-friendly vehicles on the road has never been so important.Automakers are pushing the boundaries to develop green vehicles that are both innovative and aesthetically appealing. Bill Mitchell, the world's leading guru of how city life has changed in the age of wireless communication, is now working with some of the brightest minds in academia to conceptualise a sustainable urban transport system of tomorrow. As the Alexander Dreyfoos Professor of Architecture and Media Arts and Sciences at MIT, Bill is no stranger to urban concepts and designs. He and his team of students at the MIT Media Lab Smart Cities Group are the brains behind many revolutionary automobiles including the GreenWheel electric bicycle, the RoboScooter electric scooter, and the CityCar electric automobile. With a passion and foresight for design and our better future, Bill has signed up to lead one of the Design2050 Studios, an initiative that engages design gurus and thought leaders around the world to develop propositions to tackle some of the pressing challenges we face today through design. Based on the concept of "Reinventing the Automobile2050", Bill is determined that a new kind of electric charging infrastructure can be developed into our cities to compliment the green vehicles of the future. more Designing Green Urban Mobility design directory ICSID > Industrial Design Organizations added by Levent OZLER |
