 Winners of the Interior Motives Student Design Awards 2009The automotive design community celebrated the industry's top future designers at a glamorous awards ceremony during the Frankfurt motor show.An alpine sports vehicle from Coventry University student Philip Woodman was selected as the best overall in this year's Interior Motives Design Awards. Woodman's concept vehicle made a huge impression on the expert judging panel. Design chief for auto interiors at GM Europe, John Puskar, described it as a "beautiful use of form vocabulary", while Wally Yachts design director, Adriana Monk, formerly with Jaguar, identified its "elegant, modern, precise interior with an overall harmony". Hundreds of students from dozens of design schools submitted entries to the Awards competition, now in its seventh year. The finalists for each of the eight specific awards categories assembled in Frankfurt's renowned Cocoon Club, and included students at colleges in Canada, China, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the UK and USA.  2010 Australian International Design AwardsStandards Australia announced the 2010 Australian International Design Awards, recognising product design and innovation excellence.Manufacturers and designers of professionally designed products available for sale in Australia or products professionally designed by Australians for overseas market can now enter the 2010 program and be in the running for Australia's top design award. The Australian International Design Awards is the nation's most prestigious design assessment program, recognising excellence in product design and innovation since 1958. Past winners include the Qantas A380 Economy Seat (2009), Flaik snowsports performance tracker (2008), Ford Territory (2004), and Cochlear Nucleus 24 Contour (2000). Products are assessed on their individual design merits against a range of criteria including innovation, visual and emotional appeal, functionality, quality and manufacture, human factors and environmental sustainability.  Electric Vehicles Send Designers Back to the Drawing BoardSwitching to batteries doesn't just change what makes cars go.It also allows designers to rethink the basics of how most cars are put together today, with the engine in front, occupants in the middle and cargo space in back. "The e-platform in future, say by 2020, will not need an engine in the front," said Michael Robinet, vice president global vehicle forecasts for CSM Worldwide. "It will use hub motors at wheel ends, for instance. That changes the crumple zones. You don't have a tunnel running down the middle (for a drive shaft).
