Car Design History: Nissan Passion and Beauty of Function

The exhibition traces the history of car design in Japan and gives a glimpse into the future of automotive design, with illustrative examples from Nissan's history.

Inside the exhibition room, transitions of sketch technique and manufacturing processes of scale and clay models are illustrated through sketches, pictures and tools of the trade.

An exploration of mid-size sedans, sports sedans and sports cars, with studies of the Nissan Bluebird, Fairlady and Skyline, helps show how design has changed through the years.

Six Nissan vehicles are showcased in the exhibition.

Among them are cars which have played pivotal roles in the company's history, including the Datsun 113 (1955), Sunny B10 (1966), Skyline C10 (1968) and the first-generation 240Z (Fairlady Z in Japan) S30 (1969).

In addition, PIVO and PIVO 2, two concept cars shown at Tokyo Motor Show, which show the possibilities for vehicles of the future are part of the event.

Dutch Design Week 2009 From Bricks to Sustainable Design

Dutch Design Week 2009: From Bricks to Sustainable Design

From 17 through 25 October 2009, Dutch Design Week (DDW) will be, for the eighth time, the platform for both up-and-coming and established designers.

DDW has over the years developed into the largest design event in the Netherlands.

With 60 locations, 263 events, and around 80,000 visitors in 2008, Eindhoven will for one week turn into a jungle of design activities.

With a nomination for "World Design Capital 2012" in mind, Dutch Design Week presents a wide range of design.

More than 1500 designers from home and abroad display their work in the field of industrial design, concept design, graphic design, textiles & fashion, spatial design, food design, and design management & trends.

From process to product and from industrial design to conceptual design.

The transfer of knowledge and information taking place during Dutch Design Week ensures the development of a sustainable connection between the audience, companies, and designers.

Among the DDW participants are established bureaus, high-profile designers, talented newcomers, and recently graduated designers.

This nine-day event hosts numerous lectures, workshops, openings, product launches, seminars and exhibitions such as Graduation Galleries of Design Academy Eindhoven and the Dutch Design Awards ceremony.

Burgopak Wins iF Communication Design Award 2009

Burgopak Wins iF Communication Design Award 2009

Burgopak has won the iF Communication Design Award for Packaging 2009.

The winning entry was a sleek and innovative promotional cigarette pack designed by Burgopak Germany for British American Tobacco, Hamburg as part of a marketing campaign targeted at the Austrian market.

Showcasing smart and technical detail, the Burgopak design team have created a variation on the theme of sliding mechanisms to create an elegant one hand operated promotional pack.

When the lid is opened, cigarettes of various flavours rise out of the top of the packet, ready to hand.

Simultaneously, a booklet is released on the opposite end, connected through the pack by an invisible magnet.

The cigarettes and booklet are retracted as smoothly as they appeared, re-forming the compact packet.

Evidencing continuous outstanding design achievement, this is the second year in a row that Burgopak has been awarded an iF design award.

Burgopak's innovative pharmaceutical pack design for the PocketPak line of ibuprofen and paracetamol won the iF Packaging Design Award 2008.

Re-Designing Design

Re-Designing Design

Savannah College of Art and Design faculty visits RKS to learn RKS's proprietary design thinking methodology and stay ahead of the curve in this new era of design.

After RKS founder and C.E.O. Ravi Sawhney spoke at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) last spring, Tom Gattis, Chair of SCAD's industrial design department asked RKS to develop a workshop for SCAD's entire team of design educators.

So this past week, twelve professors from the SCAD- ID group descended upon RKS's Southern California headquarters for an introduction to Psycho-Aesthetics, the RKS design-thinking methodology.

The workshop, lead by Tom White, RKS Executive Vice President, and Ingvald Smith-Kielland, RKS Vice President of Strategy, took a deep-dive approach as it immersed the SCAD team in the highly- visual RKS process.

Discussions were dynamic and brainstorm sessions were lively.

The SCAD professors soon found Psycho-Aesthetics to be a highly-adaptable framework suited to solving problems far beyond product development alone.

The SCAD team left energized after two days of productive and collaborative discourse.

"This has been a great experience that has immense value in giving direction for the future," said Dean Ermoli, while Professor Gattis found the workshop, "eye opening" and "game changing."

RKS gained a deep appreciation for the talented faculty driving this young, ambitious institution and its new programs forward.
