 Singapore Design Festival 2009Initiated in 2005 by the DesignSingapore Council, the Singapore Design Festival is a biennial platform to promote design and the design industry in Singapore, creating opportunities for networking and the exchange of ideas, and enhancing Singapore's image as a vibrant and creative international design city.The theme for this year's Singapore Design Festival 2009 is "Design 2050: Possibilities for Tomorrow" - which looks to inspire everyone to consider and examine scenarios of how life can be different in the future by design.  The London Design Festival Kicks OffThe London Design Festival kicked off with the unveiling of The Tournament, a giant chess set, which is situated in the middle of Trafalgar Square.Designed by Jaime Hayon, Spanish designer, the set will be in situ until Wednesday 23rd September and the public can arrange to play games using the 2m high chess pieces. Elsewhere in London, two installations in the Size & Matter initiative are now in place; Marc Newson's "Supercell" - a huge, colourful metal structure, and also Shigeru Ban's Paper Tower, the largest paper tower in the world can be seen on the South Bank. At the Victoria & Albert Museum an arch of multi-colour chairs has been constructed in the garden and all over the city there will be exhibitions, fairs shows, events, tours and talks which celebrate the importance of design and of London's reputation as the design capital of the world. "A new take on the humble chair, some radical, but elegant lighting, an explosion of typography - and a giant chess set in Trafalgar Square," said Boris Johnson, Mayor of London.  What's New, What's Next @ 200 LexThe Savannah College of Art and Design's furniture design department will showcase the best student designs at "What's New, What's Next @ 200 Lex," a new product showcase featuring hundreds of introductions from nearly 100 participating showrooms, hosted by the New York Design Center, Sept. 23.Designers, consumers and manufacturers will attend an afternoon and evening celebrating the very best in design. SCAD is the only collegiate institution showcasing work, which will be on display through October 7. The work by SCAD students and alumni, located on the seventh floor, represents new exciting ideas from young designers exercising their creativity in a range of materials and processes. Plastics to natural and synthetic materials, high-tech computer modeling and traditional methods are employed to develop concepts for prototyping and exhibit. At SCAD, students in the furniture design department hone their skills as designers by mastering the fundamentals and learning the design processes through which products are conceived, developed, fabricated and marketed.
