![]() Sustainability in Design: Now!The Sustainability in Design: Now! conference is a platform for sharing the latest knowledge and experiences in product, service and system design, to promote sustainable systems thinking in design education, research and practice communities.The conference approach is to look at various stakeholders in this arena - designers, design educators and design researchers - as a unique learning community. The objective is the creation of a new ethos, within such a community, enabling all possible synergies and fruitful processes of knowledge and know-how osmosis and cross-fertilisation. This conference is promoted and organized as the conclusive event of the LeNS - Learning Network on Sustainability - project, funded by EU under the Asia-link program, that aims at the development and diffusion of design for sustainability in design institutions. ![]() Greener Gadgets 2010: NYC Conference on Sustainable Product DesignThe Consumer Electronics Association announced an electrifying lineup of speakers for the upcoming Greener Gadgets conference.The annual event, which attracts the foremost green innovators, thought-leaders and environmental stewards, will take place on February 25, 2010 at the McGraw-Hill Conference Center in New York City. "This year's Greener Gadgets Conference program is our most exciting to date," said Karen Chupka, senior vice president of CEA, organizers of the Greener Gadgets conference. "Our goal with this conference is to showcase the advancements made by the consumer electronics industry, and to keep pushing the envelope in terms of sustainable product design and development. We believe that the all-star lineup of speakers at Greener Gadgets 2010 will engage and inspire all attendees." ![]() Hyundai Counts on Strength of Car Design to Sustain Sales GainsHyundai broke into the U.S. market in 1986 with a $4,995 compact car, the Excel.Now the automaker wants customers to buy its models for their looks. After boosting its U.S. market share to a record this year, Hyundai aims to build on the gains with more stylish designs. The new focus on looks, kicking off with the 2011 Sonata sedan and revamped Tucson crossover, is also aimed at helping South Korea's biggest carmaker command prices on par with larger Toyota and Honda. "The basic idea is a car that looks like a premium car, but not at a premium price," Phil Zak, Hyundai's head of U.S. design, said in an interview. ![]() Seymour Roworth-Stokes Elected as Chair of Design Research SocietyDr Seymour Roworth-Stokes, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Development at the University for the Creative Arts has been appointed as Chair of the Design Research Society - the world's leading scholarly design research body.An industrial design graduate, Dr Roworth-Stokes spent the 1980s and early 90s working as a design consultant for a diverse range of clients including BT, BAA and Huntleigh Technology, before moving into academia. He joined the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, one of UCA's founder institutions, in 1991 as a senior lecturer in design, later being promoted to Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and Development. In 2001 he formed the department of Research and Development, which subsequently secured £4 million in income for the University, whilst raising its reputation and making a significant contribution to the cultural and creative economy. "I am delighted to have been elected the 14th Chair of the Design Research Society. The DRS was the first design research society and I hope to further a wonderful tradition of support for scholarship and high quality research concerned with the process of designing," said Dr Roworth-Stokes. "In this capacity I hope to further the society's aims by increasing its profile, reputation and influence in supporting design research, and its contribution to society and the global economy.
