 London Design Festival 2009: Designs Made in BritainIn 1946 the V&A hosted a feelgood exhibition dedicated to designs made in Britain.David Nicholls is curating an exhibition at Liberty that revisits this idea. An early press conference for the London Design Festival was held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in May. One of its speakers was the festival's founder and chairman, Sir John Sorrell, who made the point that in the future, "Britain will no longer be seen as a major manufacturing centre."  Konstantin Grcic: Decisive DesignKonstantin Grcic: Decisive Design, on view in the Abbott Galleries of the Modern Wing from November 18, 2009 through January 24, 2010, is specifically devoted to the portfolio of Grcic and his firm, Konstantin Grcic Insdustrial Design (KGID), and brings together more than 100 of his objects, including furniture, products, tableware, and office accessories.Grcic is known for his logical designs, driven by an honesty of materials and an appropriateness of production methods. His diverse output re-examines how an object should look, function, and what its inherent relationship to the user should be. The works featured at the Art Institute, while spanning his career, are united by his foundational principles of simplicity, irony, and subtle humor.  2010 Metropolis Next Generation Design CompetitionMetropolis's 2010 Next Generation Design Competition is now accepting entries.This year's theme is One Design Fix for the Future. The competition is looking for one small (but utterly brilliant!) design fix that can be made now, and that will have a lasting postive impact on the designed environment.  William Halal Announced as Keynote Speaker for Icsid World Design Congress 2009Joining Ged Davis, Thomas Heatherwick and Emily Pilloton as keynote speakers at the Icsid World Design Congress 2009 is William E. Halal, Professor Emeritus of Science, Technology & Innovation at George Washington University, Washington, D.C.These four thought leaders will open the second and third days of the Congress, which will take place from 23-25 November. William Halal is an authority on emerging technologies, strategy, knowledge, and institutional change. He has worked with General Motors, AT&T, SAIC, MCI, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, International Data Corporation, the U.S. Federal Government, the Asian Development Bank, and many other organisations. Prof. Halal is the founder of TechCast, a web-based system that pools the knowledge of experts to forecast breakthroughs in all scientific fields and co-founder of the Institute for Knowledge & Innovation as a collaborative effort between the GW School of Business and the School of Engineering. Previously, he was a U.S. Air Force major, an aerospace engineer on the Apollo Program, and a Silicon Valley business manager. Macmillan's Encyclopedia of the Future ranked Prof. Halal among "The World's 100 Most Influential Futurists", which includes H.G. Wells, Arthur C. Clarke, Alvin Toffler, and Daniel Bell.
