Studio Open Drawing Back the Curtains on Design

Studio Open: Drawing Back the Curtains on Design

While the Melbourne International Design Festival presents a very public celebration of design, behind closed doors designers go about their daily business designing and developing new products and projects.

Studio Open is a very special Festival event which takes a look behind the scenes of popular Melbourne design studios.

In doing so, it encourages an understanding and appreciation of the design profession, how it works and the value that it offers.

On Friday 25 July 2008, students, designers and design-interested individuals are invited to visit participating studios to discover the day-to-day designer-style.

During their visit, people are encouraged to ask questions and investigate the processes involved in bringing a product or project to fruition.

On the day numerous Melbourne design studios (large, small, established and emerging) will lay out their welcome mats for on-the-hour public reviews between 11am and 3pm.

Designing Politics - the Politics of Design

Designing Politics - the Politics of Design

The Foundation HfG Ulm, in continuation of the former Hochschule fur Gestaltung's principles, presents this year's design competition, coordinated by the IFG Ulm GmbH.

Submissions are open for projects that address the social and political responsibility of design, using for the third year running the title of "Designing Politics - the Politics of Design".

This event will be held as an open and international competition with all projects being submitted via an Internet application process.

As with previous years, it is visually represented by a design brand.

This year's motif has emerged from a founded competition at yale Univeristy School of Art, New York, under the direction of Daniel van der Velden.

The decision to select the design motif by Mary Voorhees was made by the Advisory Board of the IFG Ulm GmbH after consideration of a total of nearly 20 submissions, of which all were of a high artistic standard.

Mary Voorhees is a graduate architect of Princeton University and is currently studying for a M.F.A in graphic design at Yale School of art, New York.

Mary Voorhees explains: "My poster was inspired by the tension within the competition title 'Designing Politics - The Politics of Design.' I was interested in the way the second half of the title modifies, and nearly contradicts, the first half.

Assuming the voices behind the phrase, I became the participants within the scene in which the title might materialise.

The resulting image is a single snapshot, a moment's observance, of this continual revision."

SolarStore IDC Develops Eco-friendly Inflatable Solar Panel for Domestic Use

SolarStore: IDC Develops Eco-friendly Inflatable Solar Panel for Domestic Use

Industrial Design Consultancy (IDC) announced its latest product development; an inflatable solar collector called SolarStore.

The SolarStore harnesses the sun's natural energy to warm domestic water and can heat up to three full tanks of water per day at temperatures close to 80°C.

For consumers in the UK, the SolarStore could provide a cheap source of domestic hot water; with an initial cost of under £100 per product, trial data has shown that the system will pay for itself in only 6 months.

This compares extremely favourably to conventional domestic solar hot water systems, which cost in the region of £2000-3000 and have payback times of around 10-20 years.

It is anticipated that the product will also be extremely beneficial in developing countries, where a reliable electricity supply can be a problem.

Other applications for the SolarStore include hot water for camping and caravanning holidays or for hot water in remote locations.

The simplicity of the device is remarkable.

When deflated, it is small enough to fit into a rucksack, yet SolarStore inflates to nearly 2m2 for maximum solar absorption.

SolarStore works by allowing sunlight to pass through a clear outer layer to a black inner layer which holds the water.
