![]() Hasbro and RISD Explore Deeper Side of PlayThere's more to playing games than having fun, say those involved in a unique collaboration between Hasbro Inc. and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).Finer points such as cultural differences among players, portability of the game and avoiding domination by any one participant are among the factors that a new generation of designers and players is exploring. Since September, 19 RISD undergraduate and graduate students majoring in three different disciplines - illustration, industrial design and digital media - have been studying the deeper side of game playing with an eye toward developing new games for the future. Board games are the focus of their study and, in particular, Hasbro's Cranium game provided the initial model. "We set out to have the RISD students think about play and game experiences in the spirit of Cranium, where everyone is good at something," said Jill Waller, vice president of design for Cranium and Trivial Pursuit at Hasbro headquarters in Pawtucket. "Here at Hasbro we always try to refresh our brands in new ways. Reinvent, re-imagine and reignite is our mantra." more www.pbn... ![]() Number of UK Designers Increases by a QuarterThe number of designers in the UK has grown by a quarter over the past five years, according to new research from the Design Council.Early analysis from the Design Industry Research survey, which is set to be released in full next year, shows that there are 232.000 designers in the UK, up from 185.500 when the research was last undertaken in 2005. However, the total number of consultancies in the UK has declined from 12.450 in 2005 to 10.800, and the proportion of larger consultancies has also fallen, suggesting that the employment increase must be attributable to growth among smaller consultancies. The number of freelance designers has grown by 39 per cent, and the number of designers in consultancy employment has grown by 35 per cent, but the number of in-house designers has grown by just 8 per cent. more www.des... ![]() Chinese Designers Making ProgressTransforming China's massive manufacturing industry from "Made in China" to "Created in China" has become a buzzword, a mantra-like evocation, offered as a solution for the industry's problems at nearly every gathering of designers and manufacturers in the country.China's industry and government clearly want that to happen, but what is the situation today? Bill Moggridge, co-founder of the well-known American design firm IDEO and designer of the first laptop computer, thinks product design in mainland China is in the same place it was in Taiwan 20 years ago, Then, Taiwanese manufacturers were anxious to move beyond making things for others, where most Chinese firms are now, and start developing their own products for global markets, he said. Over time they made that change, he said, led by consumer electronics firms like BenQ, Acer and Asustek, with Taiwanese firms now leading the way in introducing the first netbook computers, for example. Some say Chinese firms, while developing rapidly, still have much to learn before joining the ranks of the elite product development companies. Zhou Yi, who founded Shanghai design consultancy s.point 13 years ago, said design remains a "passive" function at many Chinese firms, which excel at production and technology, but don't think enough about design and related disciplines like marketing. more www.pla... ![]() Tata Nano to be Featured at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design MuseumThe Tata Nano, designed to be the world's most affordable car, will be on view at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum from Feb. 18 through April 25, 2010.Unveiled last year in India by Tata Motors, India's largest automobile manufacturer, the Tata Nano is targeted to families who had not previously been able to afford a car. Billed as "the people's car," the base model starts at $2,200 in India and can accommodate up to five adults. A bright, sunshine yellow Nano will be on display in Cooper-Hewitt's Great Hall, along with diagrams and a short film describing its concept, development and production. The name "Nano" connotes high technology, small size and low price. This ultra-cheap compact car contributes to the world of affordable motoring, and like its predecessors, Henry Ford's Model T, the Volkswagen Beetle, Citroen 2CV and the original Fiat 500, the Tata Nano continues the tradition of inexpensive cars made in large numbers. Conceived by Ratan Tata, chairman of the Tata Group, the Tata Nano is intended as an all-weather form of personal transportation that provides a safer and cleaner alternative to the two-wheelers that are pervasive in India, where often entire families ride clinging to a motorbike or a scooter. more Tata Nano to be Featured at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum design directory Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum > Design Museums added by Levent OZLER |
